Thank you all for all the positive VIBES on Greensboro! I appreciate the input so much, you have no idea! I didn't know Asheboro was only 20 mintues away. It's hard to gauge just looking at the map, they never tell you anything about how long stoplights last. ;D

Isn't there a zoo in Asheboro?

Yes, the NC Zoo. It's supposed to be one of the best in the country.

Now that I finally live here.....well, let's just say, I feel like I can finally exhale. And that's with seasonal allergies! LOL

I love it here. I don't think it's for everybody, but it' the right fit for me. And just for anybody who's thinking about it, we did two trips out here before we decided to move here and then the "interview" trip. This and some other NC towns.

When you move somewhere it's not just the one town to consider, but the state and the state of mind. Each town has something unique to offer....or not. But Greensboro seems to be a great fit for me. And I've moved alot, having been a Navy brat all my life. I've never had a hometown, but now I think my daughter will.

Greensboro is a medium sized city with leaders who want it to be big. Therefore it currently does not have small town character or many of the big city amenities or big city "sections / neighborhoods" if you know what I mean. Plan to drive alot if you move here. There are worse places to be but Greensboro is very much a city looking for an identity.

I like that it's cozy. "identity" is an interesting word, the previous poster chose. I have moved all my life, and this place feels like home to me. But that's because I'm weird, I love family, I do alot of art, and don't seem to fit in elsewhere. I wonder if that has anything to do with a city who is searching for its identity! LOL

Am considering a move ( partial retirment ) south from Fairfax VA. Pretty much had it with th DC area; crime cost of housing etc. How would a progressive 55+ couple no kids, like the outdooors and cultural stuff fare ?
Thanks

Not a whole lot in the way of cultural stuff here; I'm taking into consideration where you're located and having been in that area...I think Raleigh or Charlotte would be more your thing. It's much slower and nicer than Nova, but way smaller! My Uncle, who has been around the world, now lives there and he loves it. If he loves it, I think you would too. Greensboro though...not much in the way of retirement I'm thinking, unless you really want it slow, churchy and to cultivate some corn in your backyard perhaps. Just my opinion, but I am no Greensboro native! Not by a long shot. Seriously though, look into Raleigh, or perhaps Wilmington! Now that's a nice area, too! Very pretty.

One of the things that has surprised me about N Carolina is many retreat centers in the yogi and self- inquiry traditions of Ramana Maharshi
