Are there any "hippie" areas to Greensboro/High Point?

Anyone have anything to offer about High Point in this same funky vein??? for a couple of old (46/52) hipsters who love live music and are considering a move to High Point b/c of the price of gas versus proximity to our jobs? Our friends are mostly in Raleigh, but we have pinpointed High Point as the center of our universe in terms of the other factors which, SO unfortunately, must be placed before friends and live music. So what's the good word on High Point funkiness, or is there any?
None, nada, nil. The good news is should you locate in northeast High Point you will be within 30 min of all the areas other posters mentioned. If you desire to live in one of these neighborhoods Greensboro will be your better bet as High Point lags waaaay behind in the arts & culture arena.
Greensboro- Lindley Park, College Hill, Tate Street, Glenwood, Cedar Street area, Downtown, Southside, Fisher Park, Westerwood, Highland Park, McAdoo Heights, Lake Daniel, Sunset Hills.
High Point- hmmmmmmm, Emerywood is nice but hardly funky. Funky in HP usually means RUN. If I had to live in the High Point area I'd actually live in one of the settled older neighborhoods near Jamestown's teensy little downtown. It ain't LA, folks.
Pretty much any neighborhood within walking distance of UNC-G (I graduated from there) will have its' share of free spirits. Tate Street used to have a lot of good music, a real shame the pool hall shut down. The area has calmed down a bit but will still rock upon occasion.
I like going to Mellow Mushroom in Winston-Salem to see what I consider "normal" people with piercings and dreads, etc. I am from southern CA, so I am having a hard time adjusting to the lack of interesting looks around here...I also like walking down Trade St. in downtown W-S, but I don't know much about Greensboro.
I moved from So. CA too, so I know what you mean. I shop at Whole Foods on Miller Street, and sometimes when I'm there I see "normal" people. I will have to try Trade Street, and the areas in Greensboro mentioned in the earlier posts...
Great thread!
