Looking forward to the end result. Death Valley in Gboro is nowhere near the caliber of clusterf**k of Bus 40. Even the short ramps on Hwy 29 don't compare.

Can I call it "Old Business 40 Parkway"?

If I am understanding the situation correctly, Business 40 is being decommissioned and United States Route 421 will be the sole designation of Salem Parkway.

That's correct. Apparently emergency crews and others have referred to it as 421, solely, for years to reduce confusion.
Of course, many locals will call it Business 40 for decades to come. A lot of folks still call it Old 40 and call 40 "new 40."

I missed a 421 reference, so I'll call it "Old Salem Business 40 Parkway 421"
But on a serious note, I'm fine with Salem Parkway.

I hope driving through Winston-Salem will be less confusing with one less route designation.
Traveling from United States Route 421 southbound to Interstate 40 westbound and from Interstate 40 eastbound to United States Route 421 northbound remains to be desired. North Carolina Highway 452, the designation for the western segment of Winston-Salem Beltway from Interstate 40 to United States Route 52, should resolve that necessity.

I'm all for simplification, but to be honest, I don't really understand what's so confusing about driving through Winston. Salem Parkway takes you through downtown and 40 effectively serves as a bypass. That doesn't seem much more complicated than any other city.

Business 40 is confusing? Seriously? Business routes are not uncommon. High Point has Business 85.
And Salem Parkway won't confuse people? Seriously?

Greensboro briefly had an Interstate 40 Business Loop.
