Interstate 73 will duplex with South Carolina Highway 22 to its southern terminus in the Town of Briarcliff Acres in Horry County. The route from South Carolina Highway 22 to the North Carolina state line will be on a new location.
One thing i have noticed is that there are no Greensboro city limit signs along I-85 coming into the city from the east and south. They removed them during the loop construction years ago and never put them back. The same thing with the sign that says Welcome to Guilford County.... North Carolina's Future. They removed that sign during construction on the I-74 I-85 interchange and never put it back.

I never understood why NCDOT didn't leave I-85 on it's old routing through Greensboro in the first place. It would've been much simpler to designate the whole damn loop as I-840 instead of having the bottom half of the loop made up of I-73 and I-85. Obviously I-73 and I-785 have no choice but to use the loop, but at least it would've a single common designation.

I agree. Every city with a loop does that. In Charlotte the whole loop is I-485. I think it is confusing having four different interstates along the loop like that.
And then you dont know when you enter Greensboro because the removed the city limit signs during construction. Its been about 10 years and they still haven't put them back. They should replace them with signs that say Welcome to Greensboro.

Probably to get people to use the new southern beltway as compared to using the old alignment. You know how people's brains work, even if it said take these 3 lanes labelled I-840 for Charlotte/High Point and those three lanes labelled I-85/I-40 for Greesnboro/Winston-Salem, people might be like but I-85 goes to Charlotte.
On a side note, I've driven this dozens of times, but is that section of I-40/Bus I-85 (the old alignment) even interstate quality/standard, especially from US-29 to the I-40/Bus I-85 split, I assume they must have grandfathered it in?

The only substandard issues I can see is the bridge carrying the railroad over I-40 just east of Exit 221, since the outside shoulder narrows under the bridge. Outside shoulders must be at least 10ft. wide. The other issue is the ramp from Randleman Road to Bus-85 South just past the I-40 split, due to traffic having to merge from the left instead of the right.
I think you're right that they were grandfathered in. I doubt NCDOT could get a waiver from FHWA if the road was a brand new interstate, especially regarding that ramp from Randleman Road to Bus-85.
The final section for this project, not the final section in the state of North Carolina.
Welp, I sure walked into that one, didn't I?
