I'm curious. Why are there no plans for the beltway to encircle the entire city? It will encircle most but won't cross hwy 52 south of the city.
Probably because 40 was already built on the south side as a bypass. But it does look funny connecting to 158 and 311 and not going all the way around.

Either there is not a need for a southern beltway for decades, or plans remain in writing and not on the table. If areas south of Winston-Salem continue to grow and infill, it could be beneficial to consider options.

That's my guess, too. I-40 in W-S pretty much functions the same way as I-73/I-85 in Greensboro.
I don't think there would be much local support for building the southern half of the beltway. NCDOT had already went through litigation hell just to get the northern half started, and given their current budget problems, I doubt they'll want to go down that *road again anytime soon.
