I've posted before, but have a few more questions in my continuing research. Possible job coming through in Winston Salem, and I've gotten some info here on nice towns in the area. However, I'm looking to be a little farther east of Winston Salem and I know nothing of towns in that area. Would love to be halfway between Winston Salem and Chapel Hill. Can anyone advise about any towns between those two areas? We are looking to spend around $400,000 but would like a semi rural area. Not urban. Outskirts of suburbia would be ideal. We will be making a trip soon and would like a starting point.

Thank you!

That would be Greensboro and it's satellites.

Where's the job?
And would you really prefer to find one in CH instead?

Greensboro and Kernersville are not halfway between CH and WS. That would be more Burlington/Elon/Mebane as Kyle noted above. Some very nice areas there, but I'm curious why you'd want to build in an hour commute just to be closer to Chapel Hill. I suppose you have your reasons, but just as food for thought, WS is a great area and there are many good reasons to live here. Chapel Hill is still a relatively short drive, only an hour and 15 minutes or so.

Curious about that too. I like Chapel Hill, but unless there's something keeping you tied to CH (a partner's job, for instance), you can find a lot of what you'd find there in Winston, usually for less money. It would be super hard for me to justify 10 hours+ per week in a car if it wasn't totally neccesary, personally.

I have a friend who lives in CH and is on a rotation, currently working in Mebane. HE HATES THE COMMUTE, can't wait for rotation to put him back in CH. There are probably a variety of ways to go from one to the other, but he indicates there are no good ways!

FYI....the drive from the 40/85 split to or from Durham or Chapel Hill at peak times is HELL. I do it twice a week. And drivers in the Triangle, generally speaking, drive like moon bats.

I live in Chapel Hill and if my job was in Winston I'd want to live close to there. I am also puzzled by why you would want to live close to Chapel Hill if your job is in Winston. Chapel Hill is nice and I like it here, but I wouldn't want to live halfway between CH and W-S. Don't understand that at all. I-40/85 is nasty between the two during rush hour. Really nasty. If you are dead set on it, Whitsett would be about halfway, but not a place I would pick. It's okay, but closer to Winston-Salem would be more scenic and more interesting.

The good commutes are the ones that avoid driving in CH. Since your friend lives there, not possible to avoid driving in CH!

I can get from Alamance to Durham in 45 minutes only if I avoid CH. if I have to go through it, all bets are off.
