I mean, if you're driving from Raleigh to Charlotte, are you taking I-40 to I-85, or US 70 to US 29?
There are some Raleigh posters that take U.S. 64 to N.C. 49 when doing Raleigh to Charlotte. I personally don’t since that would require me going at least 30 minutes out of my way just to hop onto 64.
There’s also some people (usually older people) that dislike driving the interstates and would rather drive the backroads, even if it does take them longer.

There were some legislators a long time ago who wanted the state to build in interstate spur that would directly go from Raleigh to Charlotte which would bypass the Triad and cut driving time down quite a bit but that never went anywhere.

Ncdot applied and was approved to re-route us-70 in october of 2019, and route it along the entirety of wendover avenue and Greensboro and High Point and on the southern portion of nc-68.
besides diverting traffic from the dangerous "preddy Boulevard" (or i-40/historic 85), and removing "historic 85" for good (no more business interstates)
turning all of wendover into highway 70 will more than likely uprate it as one of the main highways thru town and provide even better access to:
-downtown,
-the up and coming Greenway and other developments within town.
-Nc A&T university,
-cone health Hospital/friendly avenue
-another heavy trafficked commerial artery, highway 220 North (Battleground Avenue).
-upcoming Publix distribution center being built further east on highway 70 in McLeansville- link it with the publix stores in Greensboro and Jamestown, by providing one single continuous thruway.
-High Point, Burlington. (yes). traffic in downtown Greensboro or places like Friendly avenue, Battleground Avenue would most likely prefer to take US-70 west directly to High Point or east to Burlington.
I-840 and i-40 can only do so much, as they mostly bypass Greensboro, however the US routes run directly thru it and are what give guidance to those commuting within town.
however, like anything of this nature, i'd imagine there may be some drawbacks to it.
I don't really understand this. It sounds like its just the posting of a few signs. Are there any actual road improvements involved? And as another poster alluded to, does anyone actually follow Hwy. 70 on a trip across the state?

I used to mainly take 64 to 49, but since I-85 construction has been mostly completed outside of Concord/Kannapolis, plus the southeastern part of the Greensboro loop was added, it's about 30 minutes faster to just hop on the interstates.
I have to drive between Raleigh and Charlotte a lot, but I like taking different routes when I can. Sometimes I'll take 70 from Durham to Greensboro then get on 85, or take 40 to Greensboro and then take Business 85 through High Point and Lexington. Next time I go, I might throw a curveball and take US 1 to US 501 to NC 27.
