NC-87 is the main north and south route thru all of Alamance county, leading north of Burlington/Graham to
Reidsville/Eden and south to Sanford / Fayetteville, which accounts for its high traffic volumes.

in the 90's, NC Dot devised several plans for an 87 bypass, however it suffered the same fate as the
Bragg st freeway once planned for Greensboro (which was to become US-220 once finished).... discontinued.

Neither of the 87 bypass plans came to fruition due to opposition from residents living in the respective parts of the county, and Graham's withdrawal of support.

the closest we've come is present day University drive (runs from north portion of nc 87 to i-40/85, which then connects to south portion of 87 at exit 147)

Didn't realize they had those plans. Probably lack of funding at the time. Remember during that time the Triad saw little state money for highway projects because they state was funding projects for Charlotte and the Triangle. But at some point maybe they will dust those plans off especially as Burlington continues to grow.
