the old road to Pinehurst!

it once directed motorists right from Greensboro to Ramseur, Carthage, and Pinehurst/Southern Pines, and other places that are completely bypassed by 421,
and vice versa

one time it intersected 421 right in greensboro, near forest oaks prior to mid 2000s.

now it's removed from Greensboro city limits altogether

south of greensboro it still exists, near Monnet Road and nc-62 in the Climax area and all points south.

ironically, going northbound, NC-22 is still marked with signage directing motorists to Ramseur and Greensboro, coming from Carthage and Southern Pines.

I haven't been on that highway in probably 40 years. I do remember when it used to intersect with 421

That is a relaxing and mostly scenic drive if anyone is headed to Pinehurst from Greensboro and isn't in a hurry. It certainly beats the mind numbingness of some long stretches of 421 or 220 (I-73/74). But I emphasize the "isn't in a hurry" part and would reserve that way if a leisurely scenic ride is planned as part of the overall trip.
