Danville seems to be a bit disconnected. There are no Interstate Highways, no nearby larger cities and no major airport. So its difficult for new industry to move in. The Casino is a great way to attract some tourism to the city which could one day lead to better transportation infrastructure.
Well, the All-America City award was recently bestowed upon her. There has been revitalization going on. The casino is just another part of that. Hard to predict the future exactly; people said NYC was dying in the 70s; they're saying it again now. Oftentimes opportunity is knocking when many are running away from a market. And then you're running towards it. Warren Buffet, for example, has lived by that. Could be many will go but they are building an interstate right through it. So that will certainly help things from an economic perspective in my view.
Danville's All-America City award didn't have anything to do with growth, economic development or desirability as a place to live:
"Danville’s application highlighted three specific local efforts to enhance health and well-being through civic engagement. That group includes YHELI, which helps high school students graduate on time and plan for the future; the Danville Parks and Recreation Fit Mobile program, which offers on-site fitness and nutrition classes around the city; and the Community Health Worker initiative, which works to improve residents’ access to health care and social services."
Other winners this year included Syracuse, NY; El Paso, TX and Muncie, IN. Not exactly what most people would consider hot spots of growth and desirability.
Really, almost no one pays any attention to these kinds of awards.
The All-America City designation does not carry a monetary prize, but it often brings in more tourism, new business, and even better bond ratings. It's a very competitive award, so it matters in terms of civic engagement as you said. This in effect also says that Danville is a city that cares about being engaged with citizens and providing an excellent quality of life. Certainly, that has potential impacts on desirability and growth when the I-785 is built in the years ahead. It will be built for sure, and once built, yes more will likely come.
Dealer frames. But of course that doesn't necessarily mean they live in Danville but most likely most do.
Sounds about right. A lot of people here work in NC, usually in the Triad. Hell, a few years ago when Coca-Cola closed their warehouse in Danville and consolidated in Greensboro, the then-mayor told the newly unemployed to go to Greensboro for jobs like everyone else. That got him a lot of heat.
Well, it's your opinion. I was talking about the All-America City Award, that in effect it says that Danville is engaged in civic matters. Not sure what bashing the city accomplishes. I lived in Austria for a long time. Vienna, its capital city, is the world's number one city in quality of life rankings. But that doesn't make Vienna the best place to live for a lot of folks in Austria. It gets bashed all the time by many Austrians outside Vienna. Likewise with Danville it seems by some folks in the Triad. Well, in my view the award speaks for itself. The revitalization there speaks for itself. Virginia is a nice state, too.
I think we are rapidly reaching the saturation point for casino gambling in this country, especially in this area. Between the Cherokee's 2 operations, the recently approved Catawba tribe casino near Kings Mountain, the gambling boat in Myrtle Beach, and now the Danville casino, I don't see the market demand for much more gambling in VA, NC and SC.
I agree with this. And in fact think we have already reached that saturation point in the US. So many casinos now in so many states. Too many, imho.
I have read that the NC State Legislators are aware of casinos becoming overbuilt. The Kings Mountain Casino was approved and construction has begun. But due to this potential over saturation, I would be surprised to see any more new casinos in NC. The Kings Mountain Casino will pull from Charlotte, Greenville Spartanburg, Columbia, and much of Atlanta. The Murphy Casino is difficult to reach from Atlanta due to poor mountain roads. But still the north suburbs of ATL will continue to use Murphy. I would think that those closer to Atlanta may find the drive to Kings Mtn easier.
Here are the final renderings. Just a 45 minute drive north of Greensboro. The casino developers are counting on Triad residents to help support this casino.
The casino hotel is definitely taller than the first renderings.
