UK aerospace company wants to build a $50 million facility and bring 240 jobs to Greensboro. There are more than 10 proposed projects considering the airport. The range of possible employment totals from these companies is from 250 to over 4,000. This means that at least one of these companies interested in PTI could employ over 4,000 people at PTI. More than twice the number Boom will employ. As I've stated, PTI is emerging as the Triad's RTP but instead of biotechnology it will be aerospace/innovation and these are high paying jobs, the kind of jobs the Triad desperately needs.. HondaJet got the ball rolling and really it was the FedEx hub because that led to the third runway being built and with Boom coming to PTI, its having a direct impact in companies considering PTI.

"It's not surprising that Marshall is considering PTI for the maintenance facility given the burgeoning aerotropolis and advanced manufacturing already in the Triad, said John H. Boyd, a global site-selection expert with The Boyd Co. of Boca Raton, Fla.

"Even more so than pharma and biotech, the aerospace industry — given its very demanding, precision skill sets in manufacturing and engineering — tends to cluster when making location decisions"

"There are signs of PTI and its environs becoming the new ‘downtown’ of the Piedmont Triad Region, the same way that the Research Triangle Park (RTP) has become the functional downtown of the greater Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Region,” he wrote."

According to its website, Marshall Aerospace has operations in the U.K., Europe, Middle East, Canada and U.S. Its primary customers are Air Forces across the globe.

The primary focus of the Marshall Aerospace business “is the delivery of routine maintenance, modifications and repairs to the iconic Hercules C-130 transport aircraft” that has been in service in some fashion since the early 1970s.

Yawn.

I'm not sure whats so boring about that, but I am sure the people who will work there making good money won't think its boring. The goal isn't to make sexy stuff; the goal is to create good jobs, grow the tax base, and improve people's lives.

Assuming this happens, its great for the Triad.

I agree, they are good jobs and it also sets the stage for even greater things to come.

Indeed. PTI is becoming a formidable aerospace hub. It is the best hope for the Triad’s future.

The great thing about it is that while aerospace will cluster around the airport they also have a tendency to spread far beyond the airport when it comes to manufacturing, innovation and design. This means High Point and Winston-Salem will directly reap benefits as well and Winston-Salem has an opportunity with Smith Reynolds Airport. In fact Winston-Salem has an opportunity to dedicate part of its innovation quarter to aerospace innovation if they can think beyond biotech. This is something Greensboro should consider as well with its own planned downtown Innovation District. There is a wide variety of sectors in the aerospace industry that go beyond maintenance and building planes which includes commercial/military drones, hitech manufacturing of airplane/jet components, computer technology associated with aerospace, white collar research and design and the Triad really needs to take full advantage of this. If the Triad is going to "arrive', this is how its going to happen. We'll never become a banking hub and RTP is too far ahead of us to make waves in the biotech industry. Aerospace can be just as lucrative and right now the Triad has the strongest position in the state in this sector thanks to having a less busy passenger airport. Its also symbolic being that North Carolina was first in flight.. I think about the Global Transpark in eastern NC and when you really see what happening, PTI is really what the failed Global Transpark was supposed to be. They made the mistake of taking a great idea and not building it near a population center with universities and an interstate highway network.

It's my understanding that Winston-Salem is part of the "Silicon Valley of Health Care". Not aerospace innovation. But, I could be wrong.

Boom Supersonic is like VinFast. Both are great ideas but unproven. If they succeed, then great.
