We've used the bike trails at Salem Lake and Bethabara Park in Winston Salem. What other trails do you recommend? We are carrying a two year old girl on the back.

Other than the on-street routes, W-S and Forsyth Co. are seriously lacking when it comes to trails.

If you go to their website, you'll see that there isn't even a link for cyclists. They have a generic map for parks and greenways, which takes an eternity to click through to find any useful info.
Apparently, W-S doesn't foresee an increase in popularity of cycling in the future.

The Salem Lake trail is the longest, and it links with the downtown strollway. The Bethabara and Silas Creek trails are decent, but woefully short in length.

If you want good local greenways to ride on, then go to Greensboro. That's what I do.

Tanglewood Park is a nice ride. There is a mountain bike trail there as well, but I usually just ride the paved roads through the park.

And Winston-Salem does have a bike page-- City of Winston-Salem, NC :: Bike Routes

But as Cohaagen says, most are street routes.

I've never been on Tanglewood's trails, but I've heard horror stories about how cyclists must share trails with horses.

But yeah, the city's bike page is limited to on-street routes.

Cohaagen, the bike trails are separate from the horse trails. A couple of the bike trails do cross the horse trails, so you'll need to watch out for them at the crossing points, but otherwise I've never heard of (or experienced) any conflicts between bikes and horses. I suppose one could ride their bike on the horse trails, in which case obviously you would have problems--I don't know if they allow that or not.

Here's a link with details on the bike trails:

OK, get in your car. Drive up Sat morning to Damascus VA..I bet not more than an hour from W-S. Take a shuttle up to the top of the Virginia Creeper Trail. Ride downhill 17 plus miles to Damascus. You cross 20+ trestles, you see Christmas Tree Farms.

This will be one of and probably the best Bike thing you will ever do. Should take 4-5 hours with normal pace..and that includes a lot of stops and looking time.

In only a few years, you kid can handle it as well. We first took our kids down at 10 and 8. No problems.

Do this. It is not too hard and it is not too far. If you don't you will regret it. With fall leaves it might be packed for next week or so, but it is great in May, June, as well.

VA Creeper at Damascus is a lot more than an hour from W-S. Much closer to W-S is the New River Trail. The closest/easiest accesses from W-S are at Galax, VA or Shot Tower, both are off I-77 north.

VA Creeper and New River Trails are both terrific and have easy sections for families with riders of all ages.

I agree with the other posters, other than Tanglewood and Salem Lake, there's not much else in W-S. However, we lived near Old Salem for 10 years and never got tired of riding the Salem Lake Trail.
