I now reside in the Triad area........loving it,.............moved from Philly............now.......I am soooooo afraid Im going to run into a snake this spring, I love the outdoors! I live on approx an acre of land with lots of pine trees. What am supposed to do other than run? What can I buy to prevent snakes from coming on my property? Should I send my husband to "how to kill a snake class". Do I need to buy a hoe? The snakes I'm used to seeing are behind glass at the zoo.
Thanks for your reply..............but what about these snakes (folks on my job tell me about) that chase you? Black racers? I think I'm going to pass out now, thinking about it.

"Although racers will often aggressively defend themselves and will usually bite repeatedly if picked up, they do not chase people as is often claimed."

Also, snakes like to crawl in woodpiles. Get a king snake. They will kill a poisonous snake. A friend and I were cleaning out an old out building over at my old mountain man's home place when we almost killed each other trying to get out when we ran across the biggest black snake we had ever seen. When I told my my old mountain man about it, he just laughed and said "O I forgot about old blackie, he's lived here for years. It took care of any mice or rats.
Most snakes in NC are docile, but there are snakes that climb trees, chase you, and the worst, crawl up the bathroom drain pipes and appear in the toilet at the most inopportune times.
They also get into little drawers in dressers, and frequently lunge out when the drawer is opened. Oh yeah, some will get in lights and drop on you if you walk threw the room in the dark.
Have you heard about hoop snakes. They are only found in the Triad. They bite their tail, and form a hoop, and then they roll down the street after you.
Tricky critters, them snakes.
We have venomous snakes, but thank God no poisonous ones.
One theory is that snakes around here are very very attuned to and attracted by smells.
For some reason many attest to the fact that they are put off by the combined smell of vinegar and pork and hickory smoke.
I can't verify but I have heard they are actively attracted, and I am talking chasing here, to the smell of cheese and steak.
Anyway, you don't have a lot to...what is that...something in the light....oh no itss a sssnnsklkl.........
After we move to NC in May, I may never be able to sleep.
Snakes.
Totally freaking me out.
