Hi,
I am currently a student in Chicago. I grew up in the suburbs, and moved to the city three years ago. I've always traveled and have always wanted to live in different places. I lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan for a bit but had to move back to Chicago due to finances and just because I wasn't happy there at all.
I've been looking to transfer to a school for music performance.
None of the schools in Chicago appeal to me and I want to get out and live elsewhere anyway.
North Carolina School of the Arts is high on my list. I'm wondering what life is like for a student in her early 20's in Winston-Salem. I know it's much smaller, etcetcetc. But what's the general feel of the place? Music activities? Art?
The school wouldn't be the only thing pulling me to NC . . . I have loads of family in Columbia, SC and a three hour drive is much more doable than a 13 hour drive!
My daughter is going to UNCSA (the new name) this fall. She went as a high school student for an 6 week summer program there, several years ago and was blown away by the facilities, the staff, and the other kids that were there from all over the eastern part of the country. And that was a summer session for high school kids.
NCSA is not like a regular college, it is as close to 24/7 as you will get.
Frankly, I don't think life in WS is going to be a big issue for you. I think you will stay very busy at school.
WS is not Charlotte or Raleigh, but it is relatively cosmopolitan, and was just listed as a top 10 place to start over by either Business Week or Newsweek.
Wake Forest is there, too, so there is stuff to do, but I really believe the work at NCSA will keep you occupied.
Good Luck, NCSA is a wonderful opportunity. I hope you get in!
UNCSA has a terrifc curriculum, but if that doesn't work out, do consider UNC Greensboro. Their music school is also top-notch.
