I am a retired NYPD Detective on SS disability due to a heart problem. I'll be moving into the Greenville County area around June of 2021. I currently have Emblem Health (GHI) through my pension. Which appears to be not widely accepted in South Carolina. In November 2021, I will be qualifying for Medicare and will be able to possibly change Emblem Health to a different plan accepted in the Greenville County area. Possibly senior care in Aetna, Cigna, or Empire. I am mainly looking at Cardiologists and Electrophysiologists with the Prisma Health Network. Are there any Retired NYPD or ex Emblem Health retirees in the Greenville area that can advise any help. I tried calling Prisma Health on types of insurances excepted and whether they would accept Emblem Health. But they weren't too helpful or friendly over the phone. I am also interested in possibly finding social services where maybe someone can help me pick the best medical plan linked to the NYC retiree network in the Greenville County area. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
My husband has NYS Empire Plan insurance through United Healthcare, and we have not had any issues with to being accepted at any practice we have gone to. Funny- saying that reminds me of when we moved to Raleigh from LI 20 years ago, and they looked at our health insurance card like they had never seen one before- guess they hadn't!
According to the current 2021 rates for NYC retired employees seeking nationwide medical coverage, they only have 2 options in South Carolina. Empire BCBS Health Care family medical plan which is $2,720.80 a month deduction out of their monthly pension payment. That's $32,649 a year and they're out of their minds if they think a retiree is going to pay that. The other plan is Emblem Health/GHI. The City pays for the member and the member pays $12 a month for their spouse. So it's a no-brainer why retirees stick with Emblem Health. They list some doctors, Family practitioners, GYN's, PT, urgent care, and some others. But no specialists. Emblem Healths pays crap out of network. Going to have to stick it out till medicare comes along...
