The chain is not for sale at the present time. That was just a rumor which the Greenville News debunked recently. If the chain was for sale though, i'd rather see it be bought by Kroger seeing how Publix is already in this area.
Link?
The ones I've found say it's still for sale...but I'm with you. I would prefer to see Kroger come back to the Upstate. Then we'd have a good old fashioned price war here vs. Publix like they do in Atlanta.
I provided links above from Reuters & CNN that say it's still for sale. We're awaiting your evidence to the contrary....
I can't find the link anymore. Even if I could, you would need a login username/password to read the article. Besides, the articles you posted are ONLY based on rumors and were written in early August. It's almost November now. There is NO proof Bi-Lo is for sale still. And even if it was, that doesn't mean it would be sold. Look at what happened with Food Lion's plans to buy Bi-Lo.
Other info regarding Bi-Lo: Lone Star made a $150 million equity investment in the company and remains its majority owner. In addition, Credit Suisse provided $200 million in committed term loan financing and General Electric Capital provided a $150 million revolving credit facility.
Unless Bi-Lo emerges with an entirely new selection of products and a new staff training program, you won't find me in one. Their food is often out of date and of poor quality.
FWIW, Google says that Bi-Lo's CEO says they are not for sale:
Briefs: Bi-Lo ‘very solid,’ not for sale, chief executive says - Business - TheState.com (http://www.thestate.com/2010/10/08/1502460/briefs-bi-lo-very-solid-not-for.html - broken link)
"Michael Byars said he has told employees that when a company like Bi-Lo is owned by an investment group, “There’s always opportunity that you could be sold.”
I have to say some of their stores are in dire need of remodeling, I enjoy shopping at the one in powdersville immensely, however the one in the walmart plaza here in easley is in poor shape, and never seems to have what I am looking for.
taken from a columbia newspaper: "A spokeswoman for Food Lion, whose Belgian parent last year agreed to buy a majority of Bi-Lo's assets before the deal fell through, said Tuesday the company wouldn't comment "on market rumors or merger speculation."
So it sounds like nobody knows if its really for sale or not, I wish Greenville's newspaper wasn't a pay site now. I love how in the article above the CEO says its not for sale and then there's always the chance that it could be sold, lol
