There are lots of small private colleges in the Upstate (Furman, Wofford, Southern Wesleyan, Erskine, etc.) Clemson is the one large "major" state school in the Upstate, with 2 graduate school campuses in Greenville (one a business school downtown, and the other in automotive design at CU-ICAR on I-85). There's also USC-Upstate in Spartanburg and Lander University in Greenwood. I'm probably leaving some out; others will no doubt fill in the gaps. Good luck!
Spartanburg has: Wofford College, Converse College (Woman's school), Spartanburg Methodist College (2 year), USC Upstate and Sherman and SCC if you want to count those...
Bob Jones is the super conservative Christian college. It's fairly well known around the country.
Bob Jones University is the largest, most ethnically-diverse university in Greenville.
Bob Jones did not allow blacks to enroll until 1971. 8 years after USC and Clemson did. They also didn't allow interracial dating until 2000 - and only struck that down from all the negative publicity they were getting. Oh...and in there spare time, they like to stand on Main Street and yell things like "Aids is a cleanser" and "God hates f*gs". So yeah, real diverse, tolerant place.

Then is then, now is now. BJU has students from fifty foreign countries. Not exactly an all white student body. Are you sure you have your facts straight about them standing on street corners yelling what you said? That sounds like the Westboro Baptist Church, which isn't Baptist, and from what I've heard is just an extended family of lawyers looking for opportunities to sue people who infringe their right to protest. Perhaps you're uninformed, or maybe you just like painting with a broad brush?

This is exactly the type of misinformation that is typical of antagonistic critics who know nothing about the school except what they hear and read from outside sources, or have allowed prejudice to affect their perception of reality.
The school's belief about racial diversity (http://www.bju.edu/welcome/who-we-are/race-statement.php - broken link) is far from intolerant.
The people who occasionally (rarely is more accurate) show up on the Piazza Bergamo are not students or faculty of BJU. The school does not condone such hatred toward anyone, because their belief as defined in the Holy Bible is that everyone is equally sinful (guilty of willful disobedience to the Creator's supreme authority) and in need of salvation (a gracious gift offered freely to everyone who acknowledges and obeys the Creator's authority out of true love and appreciation) from the dreadful penalty of sin (eternal torment).
The same mistake is made whenever critics assume BJU is behind every Christian/conservative display locally. The reality is, there are significant differences between the activism condoned by BJU and a church/school like Tabernacle Ministries, which I am aware is known for its support of audacious street preaching in town.
