city-data info is on 26.1 square miles of a city that is in a county that is 700+ square miles, and everyone here travels to the city. If anyone has an axe to grind it's new york born. I never post negative about a place I left. That tells me that some of this could be personal issues.

City-data has numbers on the county as well as the city.

For the county comparison:

Estimated median household income in 2009: $45,661 ($41,149 in 1999)
This county: $45661
South Carolina: $42442

Since the OP was specifically asking about moving from Sarasota, here are the same numbers for Sarasota County:

Estimated median household income in 2009: $45,341 ($41,957 in 1999)
This county: $45341
Florida: $44736

Cost of living in SC is lower overall compared to FL, jobs are more plentiful (based on unemployment), average pay is about the same, and housing (rental or purchase) is cheaper.

The OP said something about 'manufacturing'. I think your chances should be good around Greenville, depending upon what your skills are. I'm currently in the Tampa-ST Petersburg area, and manufacturing is indeed pretty slim. Greenville, on the other hand, seems poised to become a real automotive manufacturing hub, with BMW, ZF, and all of the support businesses in that area that feed the big manufacturers. There's also signs of an up-and-coming electric vehicle industry forming. In short, for manufacturing, FL is in decline, while the upstate is a growth area. I'm in the tooling and machining trades, and pay scales seem comparable to this area.

While some cost of living factors are definitely lower in SC, real estate in FL has fallen so far, so fast, that it is probably comparable with the upstate area.
