A question for you all.

I'm looking to rent a home close to the Cain Halter YMCA and Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church. The YMCA looks like a fabulous facility...Thoughts, experiences?

Also, can anyone tell me if this is a good area for a young family with kids?

I would like a community where the kids could ride their bikes without me being concerned for their safety. I've never been in this area of Greenville before, so any help on communities to look into would be appreciated.

I'm not adverse to living 5+ miles away, but not much further. I want convenience !!!

Also, how are the schools in this area out of curiosity?

Thanks!

Neither of those areas are considered downtown. The area around Caine Halter is great area but you may want to drive around some the roads are pretty busy. While I really like that area I would not say there are too many places around there that I would let my kids ride their bikes in the neighborhood without me there. It is near the Swamp Rabbit trail which runs behind the Y and 1st Baptist (it goes from Travelers Rest to that area and maybe the route to Conestee is finished by now). You can look up a map about Swamp Rabbit at www./greenvillerec.com/parks/swamp-rabbit. We do that trail as a family activity.

Most of the immediate area go one of three elementary schools; Blythe, Augusta Circle and Sara Collins. I know many people with kids in those schools who love them and they are well rated schools. I don't really know much about middle of high school since my kids are elementary and preschool aged and most have kids the same age.

I would look further from I-85 in the Augusta Road area than Our Lady of the Rosary. I would not look much closer to the interstate than Blythe Elementary.

Hope this helps some.

The area around that Y can be a bit pricey as well. The Overbrook area off E. North St is very near downtown (but a few miles from the Cain Halter Y) and should be more affordable. I really don't know about what schools that area's kids go to though.

Some answers:

1. The Caine Halter Y is fantastic (especially the fitness areas, probably the best Y branch in Greenville) - you might want to also check out the new Kroc Center - the indoor swimming facilities are better and the soccer field is amazing - but, the fitness facilities are a little small (compared to the Y)

2. The area immediately surrounding the Caine Halter Y is wonderful for families - some notes: most homes in this area are zoned for Sara Collins Elementary (great school) but then these kids go to Hughes Academy (at best, an average middle school) and Greenville High (near downtown, not my favorite, it seems to be slowly declining - my opinion only). Now, if one lives just south of Pleasantburg, children are zoned for Sara Collins, Beck/new middle school opening in 2013, and JL Mann High (all better schools).

3. The Swamp Rabbit Trail (http://greenvillerec.com/parks/swamp-rabbit/ - broken link) is currently expanding south and will stop at South Pleasantburg/Cleveland Street - I anticipate the trail will finally connect with its southern extension (thru the Parkins Mill area) in 2-3 years.

4. IMO, the safest communities in this area are all in the Parkins Mill area: Gower, Quail Hill, Kellett Park, Collins Creek, Preserve at Parkins Mill, and others.

Is the parkins mill area a part of Greenville? And th other areas you mentioned? Are they in GV county? Or other? And without hijacking thread what area would be ideal for young families where schools are not of importance? If that's hijacking too much just tell me sorry.

Just to clarify, a good bit of Cleveland Forest is also zoned for JL Mann.

Aerkick79-
Parkins Mill is a part of the City of Greenville. It's a wonderful place for families.

Default North Main

We've been renting a house in the North Main area for about six months and really like it. There seem to be a lot of young families and kids around. It's not too far from the YMCA (probably about three miles) and our house is about a 25-minute walk from downtown (just over a mile).

North Main may also be a little cheaper than the area right around the YMCA.
