Like gsupstate posted, there is a lot of variety. Once you filter out restaurants, bars, and art galleries (loads of galleries on Main St) you'll find a little bit of everything with the exception of a bookstore. Bentley's Bookshop closed a few years back. I was really hoping another bookstore would fill the void, but not as of yet.
Beckycat, what type of stores do you enjoy shopping at?

The General Store looks cool. Any type of funky stores or variety stores. My son likes stores with collectibles and nostalgic things.
Other downtown shops your son may find interesting include Ayers Leather Shop, Horizon Records, Michelin on Main, The Emporium, Christopher Park Gallery, Go Fish, Deluxe Guitar Exchange, and Hincapie Sportswear, to name a few...
Also be sure to browse the selection of excellent shops along Augusta Street between Church Street (near downtown) and Mauldin Road (near I-85).
One other important thing, your son would likely find the nostalgic Northgate Soda Shop a local treat as a collector.
Thanks for the suggestions We just arrived here and took a quick drive down Main St. They had part of Main St closed off for the music tonight. I'd have like to stay longer but everyone was tired from the long drive. We will definately go back in the the next few days that we'll be here.
