That's what I was thinking, but Greenville already hosts the US professional cycling championship. Perhaps it is a less followed sport. Greenville has hosted numerous national tournaments and championships in the recent past, from fencing and karate to bass fishing and golf. It may be a sport played by youth, like the Big League World Series hosted annually in Easley.

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- It's official: Greenville will host the 2014 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Championships.

The city beat out other cities around the world that bid for the chance to host the event, according to multiple sources.

Para-cycling is a sport that includes road and track events for athletes with a physical or visual impairment.

Last year's world championships were in Denmark.

More than 350 athletes from 50 countries participated.

The games will be held in September 2014.

The Greenville 2014 bid was a collaborative effort between NOTUS Sports, the city of Greenville, U.S. Handcycling and Medalist Sports.

Representatives from all each group will be at an official news conference at City Hall at 2 p.m. Monday

great news happy for Greenville... but this is not a major sporting event in any way.

Oh well, pretty cool that athletes with disabilities will be performing at such a high level in Greenville could be an eye opening event to watch.

C'mon G-man
I guess we all set bars where we set them but this is not a major sporting event anymore then a Jai Lai tournament or snooker tournament would be major.

The US national para-cycling championship was hosted by Greenville last year during the USA Cycling Professional Championships. This is another fantastic honor for the citizens of our city.

IMHO it's pretty major if it's drawing participants from other continents.... It's THE international championship for that particular sport/discipline.
