I very much sympathize with the single woman that started this thread and sad to say, wasn't terribly surprised by the rather nasty response probably from somebody here in Hilton Head about this person not being "happy anywhere". Sour grapes are served up on a regular basis here. It gets pretty annoying folks. The truth is that Hilton Head is not for everyone. I hope she moved away and doesn't look back because she is happier where she and her child have moved to.
Hilton Head is truly a retirement community, with a very brief summer vacation period, and not a year round place for children , or indeed, anyoneunder the age of about 70. I assume that at that stage of life, they are relatively happy here if they are homebodies and just want to live in a warm climate. And that is just fine, really. Life is r-e-a-l-l-y s-l-o-w here and can be a paradise if that is what you are looking for. Everybody wants different things.
But, there isn't much going on. Even the cable TV makes you "Please wait" when you are changing the channel! What is going on with that? Bad internet (SO SLOW) and terrible cell phone service no matter whose service you get. Dropped calls all the time. Dreadful really unless you actually want to walk around saying "Can you hear me now?" and realize you will have to call them back yet again when there is <sigh> no answer and the ever popular, " Call Lost" flashes on your phone. I promise I will never ever take technology for granted again. Edge of the earth stuff. Time warp in more ways than one.
The closest major city is 5 hours away. The only acceptable movie theater is a half hour away and if you go there, you may be the only people sitting in the room. It feels absolutely post-apocalyptic sometimes. This is the truth. This is what it is like to live here.
Hilton Head can be a fun and family friendly place for maybe 2 weeks for your summer vacation or visiting with the grandparents but other than those summer months, kids really won't have much of a life here. I certainly wouldn't appreciate my parents doing that to me. The Hilton Head experience is just too limiting for a young person.
I don't feel that way about HHI but if its not working for your lifestyle it's time to move on. I recently moved for PA to Greenville, SC. I enjoy the area, there is tons to do here. It might suit you and your child. I suggest researching the area. Living in Greer or Simpsonville ate good, low-cost options. The city is very diverse. Almost everyone I meet in the city of Greenville is a transplant. There are many northerners here. We have 4 seasons a year due to the proximity to the mountains. This winter has been very bearable. I suggest taking a drive here and exploring o a week. It takes us 3.5 hours to get here from HHI.
