Cedar Fair is making significant upgrades to Carowinds as part of its strategy to become "the Cedar Point of the Southeast." They are not going out of business, and are making a big investment. In recent years we have seen major rollercoasters such as Intimidator and Fury 325, the world's tallest and fastest gigacoaster. An expanded Carolina Harbor waterpark. And next year, a new County Fair area with traditional carnival rides, including a top scan thrill ride which spins upside down. And Carowinds is only about 90 minutes from many areas of the Upstate, so it is really considered the primary amusement park for the Carolinas, not just Charlotte. Although Six Flags Georgia and Dollywood are also options, as well as Kings Dominion and Bush Gardens for the Raleigh area of NC.
With that being said, a nice small amusement park similar to the old Myrtle Beach Pavilion or Family Kingdom would indeed be a nice idea. Some classic carnival rides and perhaps a small rollercoaster. Somewhere along Wade Hampton between Greenville and Spartanburg would perhaps be a good location, maybe in an abandoned strip shopping center somewhere. Probably around Greer or Lyman areas.
Other than Central Florida, do new amusement parks even get built in the US? The large regional parks already dominate the landscape, and the smaller places all seem to be family joints that have been around for a century.
It would be nice to have a large waterpark with lots of slides, lazy river, wave pool, putt putt golf, etc. in the upstate. We do have small "attractions" but they are always crowded and not much to do.

Great Wolf Lodge type place? They've got one in Charlotte (Concord) and are building another south of Atlanta (Lagrange, GA) to be open in 2018..
The problem with a large waterpark type place outside of the 'indoor' park like GWL.. It has to bring in all its money for the year in a 3-4 month period. Memorial day to Labor day.
Didn't Carowinds try to capture the space of being the "upstate" amusement park by having half of the park on the SC side of the border?
Its sort of like the "Carolina" Panthers trying to capture the entire NC/SC market by not specifying which "Carolina" they reside in.
Carowinds was envisioned as a joint attraction for North and South Carolina from the beginning. It's in both states on purpose, not as a gimmick to get SC residents to come.
Same with the Panthers. They are not a North Carolina team trying to break into South Carolina. They're meant to represent both. 4 locations were considered for the Panther's stadium, and 2 were in SC. The SC flag flies along with the NC and American flags. And the slogan is "two states, one team." Also the logo is vaguely meant to silhouette both states together.
