Something is going on at WYFF because they are using an old news set it looks like. They just recently changed graphics, intro and music and they keep advertising something new and bold is coming soon. A new set? HD?
Nielsen's market #37 is Western Carolinas. It consists of Greenville, SC/Asheville, NC/Spartanburg, SC/Anderson, SC. If western North Carolina and upstate South Carolina were separated into smaller markets, both markets would sharply fall in rank.

WYFF updated their website recently, so its probably not that. The station has faced stiff competition with WSPA and WLOS in news presentation and time devoted to newscasts, so a major upgrade in its news operation is always possible. Reinstating its Weather Plus subchannel would be cool, but NBC's acquisition of The Weather Channel made it useless.

WYFF-4 is upgrading local news to HD on April 22 and is in the process of building a new set. It will be a much needed improvement, as WSPA and WLOS already broadcast the local news in HD, as well as most Charlotte stations. The difference in video quality is noticeable when you watch with an outside antenna.

I figured that because the set they have been using the last month or so looks kinda temporary and definetly is not the one they had previously used.

Has WHNS upgraded to HD yet?
If WYFF is getting a new set and upgrading to HD, I wonder if it will add more time to its weekday newscasts. WYFF produces 5 hours of news each weekday.
Breakdown of hours of news on a weekday produced by the four news stations:
WSPA: 7.5
WLOS: 7.0
WHNS: 5.5
WYFF: 5.0
I thought they would do a 4:00 when Oprah ended. They need to move OZ, Ellen or The Doctors to 10am as a replacement for the useless 3rd hour of the Today show and do a 4:00 news.
Something like this: 9:00 Kelly Ripa 10:00 The Doctors 11:00 Rachael Ray
12:00 News4
12:30 Andy
1:00 Days of our lives
2:00 Ellen
3:00 Dr Oz
4:00 News4
4:30 Andy
5:00-6:30 News 4
Not sure what you mean by "Western Carolinas" the link provided specifically says Grernville/Spartanburg/Anderson/Asheville. Besides as I already explained Nielsen did that with many markets, i.e Birmingham/Anniston/Tuscaloosa. Not sure what your point is.

Agreed. The GE/NBC juggernaut is becoming a frightening thing!
GE has sold off its share in NBC to Comcast. NBC's parent company is NBC Universal.

Today has four hours of programming. The third hour is preempted for Live with Kelly.
None of the four area news station have a 4pm newscast. WHNS had one 30 minute newscast at that time briefly in 1999. It shifted to 5pm before ceasing.
If WYFF had to add a newscast, Andy Griffith and a talk show would be cut. Adding another digital subchannel to move and add some syndicated programming is optional.

"Western Carolina" emcompasses upstate South Carolina and western North Carolina, the westernmost areas of the Carolinas.
