VERY good point - I hadn't even considered that.

At the same though, it might not have fit the area that they wanted to place it, since I've noticed they put high priority on being near hospitals. Also who knows how much the other hospital site would have cost them, or how much to change configuration and bring it to their code.

It is going to be a very nice facility with almost everything except major surgiery. I know this because my man is building it. He is one of the Project Managers/Superintedants and although he usually is in a managers position he has been in the ditches for about 5 weeks now working on the under ground piping. He says " I want it right" and took this project over another because he feels it is one of the best things he can do to honor the Vets in the area. I have seen the drawings and the facility will be able to do so much more for our Upstate Vets. than the old facility. Will cut the trips to Columbia's Dorn, Ashville as well as Augusta
which I feel it is a wonderful thing. I know my Dad was a Vet, My uncle, and several other friends and some family. The trips to Columia, Ashville, and Augusta Ga. are tiring to say the least, then the waiting, and waiting, then finally get to see the Doctor, or have the procedure done. It is all gonna change with the new V.A. outpatient clinic going up. The completion dead line is March 2013 per my man and his knowlegde of were they are in the construction process as of today. Rain has set them back a little bit but they were a bit behind from the start. So to all you Vets out there Our Thanks for all you have done to protect us and the U.S. This facility will be one of the best in the upstate area, and just know that those out there building it are very proud to do this, so that our Vets will have better quality of care. Me being an R.N. and having Vets as patients from time to time am very proud to care for each and every one who may have been a patient of mine. Memorial Day I worked and I have World War II Vets in my facility. Being the care giver I am I can not wait for the new V.A. Clinic to be completed. I am so excited because as I mentioned I have seen the blue prints, and it is gonna be amazing. I feel any Veteran will be happy with the care and the other medical procedures that the facility will be able to do without sending anyone to Columbia, Ashville or Augusta Ga. So to all you Veterans get ready for a brand new Out patient clinic come Sring of 2013. It is a wonderful thing to see first hand what the facility is going to be able to do for all the Veterans here in this area. Kmedlock

I recall reading the article re this new VA facility from Journal Watchdog - however, it's quite vague.

kmedlock12, you mention that this facility "[will have] almost everything except major surgery". What specific new services will the VA be offering in Greenville? Any additional specialists, updated imaging tech, or outpatient surgery? Please tell me that there is more than just additional square footage, parking spaces, and LEED certification.

Additionally, it baffles me that Greenville/Upstate doesn't have a dedicated VA hospital/medical center (yet Asheville does).

I agree about the Ashville V.A. hospital and at one time they have kicked around the idea of updating the old Allen Bennett Hospital, but Oh no that would have taken money away from the Huge Greenvile Hospital System so that fell through long time ago. Yes to answer your questions, There will be state of the art medical equipment. MRI, CT, of course all new
x-ray or radiology department, dental, psych., gastrointestinal, oh gosh there was so many rooms on those blue prints we were amazed. I can go on but to be honest I saw the blue prints and there are so many exam rooms, small surgical suites, that I have forgot a lot of what we looked at on the blue prints before the project started. I will ask my guy to bring home a copy of the blue prints, or I will go over and look at them. I am doing a paper on the project and need to see the blue prints again anyways. It is more than most people believe that the clinic will be able to provide. Also I feel it will take a little time to hire up medical personnel, most of them will be Vets I would hope. So it is time consuming and deadline is March 2013. That also is if there is not to much rain causing delays in the construction as there has been some rain delay. So I would estimate that the new V.A. Clinic might be up and running no later than late April maybe. Will keep you all updated as long as he is there working on the project. His company pulls him from project to project so he may get pulled to another job site but will still be in the loop from time to time.

Default Allen Bennett wasting away

It's all politics and power as usual. I'd be willing to bet someone's brother or brother in law is getting rich from this build and land purchase! Our vets do deserve the best however that new fancy looking hospital will not make them any more well than the closed Greer hospital would have! When any vet ever went to the hospital when they were serving there was no Great Looking Fancy Hospital on base to go too, but they still had good service! I proclaim that things like this is why health care is so expensive! My wife was in that new hospital Greenville built to replace Allen Bennett and she did not get a bit more well than she could have at the old Allen Bennett! There were two TVs in her private room along with a grand player piano on the first floor. I wondered how much healing that piano or extra TV was gonna do and what the money used to get it could have been used for than just sitting there. Ok, enough of my rant I feel better now. I hope you all have a great day and stay well please.

PS. My father in law gets paid gas money to go to Columbia from Greenville once a month. I wonder how much gas money overall will be saved?
It is a waste that the Allen Bennett is sitting there empty, and at one time there was talk of the V.A. getting it, but something happened and the contract fell through because it would interfer and take money from the new Greer Hospital that has been a huge waste of tax money. It is a shame that they did not use that area for the Veterans here in the upstate and just open a Veterans Hospital, there was even talk of using the old Roger Huntington nursing Home in back as a homeless apt. complex for our Vets. The all mighty Government really sux cause that would have been so easy to remodel & reroof. Probably a lot less money, with much more space and even could have had major surgical suites there. That just goes to show how much money GHS get from the state and U.S. government. Sorta like they throw our Vets under the bus, I am thankful for the new super clinic but I still feel Allen Bennett would have been a perfect place to pull a lot of good things together for all the Vets.

When is the last time you seen or heard of a commissary at a major VA hospital? A very small BX/shopette yes, but nothing more.

If you know someone on the 'inside' then do they know exactly what has postponed the plans in Anderson for so long?

I was wishing for a stand alone. The chances of anything like that away from a base are zero.
