My parents live closer to JFK and Islip/MacArthur is also good. How far is Charlotte's airport from Greenville. I know Jet Blue has direct service from Charlotte/JFK.

Unfortunately for flights from Greenville to JFK you'd have to go through somewhere else. This isn't to say that you can't get a flight cheaper than driving to Charlotte though as I think United goes through Washington and from there you could get a flight to JFK. I use Farecompare.com to watch prices. They currently show a flight from Charlotte to JFK for $183.29 round trip via United for certain dates in October.
Charlotte is only about 1 1/2 hours. The airport is on this side of Charlotte.
