I'm looking to take my wife to a semi formal restaurant for our 5th wedding anniversary. It might be just for lunch but if someone could suggest both a lunch and dinner restaurant in the Greenville area that'd be great. We're not talking suit and tie and 3 week reservation, just something where we can get dressed up and enjoy some great food and atmosphere.

My recommendations:

Sassafras - great Southern/"Low Country" cuisine, probably the best value in Greenville

The Owl - eclectic cuisine, tapas style, great value, this is the type of restaurant I'd normally expect in Asheville

I love the Owl, but the atmosphere may not be what you are looking for, for your anniversary. Again, I love it. I'd just check it out first to see if it's what you are looking for. It's night and day from Sassafras, which I find boring and a bit mediocre myself.

American Grocery would be my first pick. It's much pricier than the Owl, and WAY more interesting than Sassafras. It is perfect for a special occasion.

Some good suggestions above, some may not hit all the required criteria.

Based on the OP's objective of semi-formal ..... I would suggest High Cotton. It meets the lunch/dinner criteria, the ambiance is upscale but not too stuffy (semi-formal), menu prices won't break the bank, food quality always excellent, noise levels allow conversation without shouting but more importantly, it's not too casual (thus spoiling the celebratory nature of the meal).

No lunch hours. OP wanted a place that offered him an option to do a lunch or dinner.

Same problem with these other suggestions, they do not serve lunch:
  • Chophouse 47
  • North Hampton Wine Cafe (except @ the bar on Saturdays)
  • Breakwater
  • Nantucket Seafood
  • The Owl
  • American Grocery
Now if it were me, this kind of meal would be done over dinner and then all options are on the table (so to speak). However, the question was framed within specific parameters.

I second the suggestion of High Cotton, but I also nominate Larkins on the River.
