Bienvenu! Gruezi! Bienvenidos! Willkommen! Witamy! Welcome! However you say it, we want to say welcome to the Spartanburg International Festival!

People from more than 60 countries reside in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Some countries may be represented by a family of four, and others are represented with thousands, like Germany and Switzerland. As more than 100 international businesses make Spartanburg home, it’s easy to see how this southern community became so diverse. More than 20 years ago, the City of Spartanburg and the Human Relations Commission decided that this wonderful diversity needed to be celebrated…that people born right here in Spartanburg and the Upstate needed to “meet” their new neighbors and learn about their culture and customs. The first Spartanburg International Festival was held in 1985 at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. The festival continued to grow over the years and expanded to Barnet Park in 2000.

The 21st annual Spartanburg International Festival will celebrate Spartanburg’s diverse multicultural community. The event not only brings the cultural spirit of Spartanburg to light, but also provides an opportunity to share and be a part of such a vast cultural exchange. Additionally, the festival gives people who have moved to the area a chance to reconnect with their roots.

Organizers promise a world of fun from around the globe, including entertainment, food, music, exhibits, dance, and activities for the entire family. You can even get your “passport” stamped when visiting each country! Admission is free, but you will want to bring money to purchase food and souvenirs from around the world.

I wish they wouldn't hold events like this in Barnet Park though. Close Main Street and fill Morgan Square, that's what I would rather see.

I can't decide between International Day or Oktoberfest in Greer!

I wonder if we can do both?

We went to Oktoberfest last year and it was great, the food was some of the best i've ever had. I'm still thinking about those soft pretzels.

If you do go to Oktoberfest you'll need to take along an extra person to stand in the the beer line, it was literally 1/2 mile long last year.

Greer is about 10-15 minutes straight up 14 from Simpsonville.
14 turns into Main St. in Greer so it will take you straight to downtown Greer.

I think everyone should ignore you, because it is obvious that you are trying to bait g-man into an argument.

Your argument is illogical because international festivals are held in nearly every city (actually several in Greenville) whether they are internationally diverse or not, and whether they have more or less culture than the average city. Sure, a festival can be used to indicate a city's cultural makeup, but if you want to compare international cultural festivals between Greenville and Spartanburg, you'd be shut up in a heartbeat. My point is that if you rely on a festival alone to make your point, you'll have a much harder time formulating a convincing case. For instance, look at places like the Pee Dee region in South Carolina and the Tri-Cities region in Tennessee which each have an annual international festival, yet they don't have nearly as much international culture among their population when compared with the Upstate. So should we just assume that since they have an annual international festival that they must be loaded with international diversity? You have yet to prove your claim that "Spartanburg has more culture than Greenville." Until you make an adequate effort to do so, those posts are going to remain meaningless to the rest of us. Do I have to post why I disagree with your claim yet again?
