I am exploring a work opportunity in Greenville and will be heading down there mid October for 2 days. My main reason for applying to this job was that it's close to Norcross, GA, 2 - 2.5 hour drive, which is where my boyfriend will be moving to for his job. My field is rather limited so as of now there aren't any full or part time jobs in Atlanta. Greenville seems nice although I don't know much about it, and besides being close to Atlanta, I like how it's close to Asheville.
What do you like about living there? Also, are there any other cities, you would recommend that are more in between ATL and Greenville. Perhaps Anderson, SC? Or is it better to just be in Greenville because there will be more to do?
We are both in our early 30s and are interested in the outdoors, mountains, going out to dinner and we also enjoy wineries, farmers markets, live music.
Greenville is the epicenter of the Upstate with it's renowned downtown and Falls Park. With your interests, I would really only choose Greenville as all other Upstate cities pale in comparison.
Retail/shopping venues (in Greenville) are comprised of 3 areas: (of course) downtown, Haywood Mall area, and Woodruff Road (Trader Joe's, Total Wine, REI, etc).
Yes, the main advantage of Greenville is its close proximity to the mountains - I'm 75 minutes to downtown Asheville and 45 minutes to elevations > 3,000 feet (Caesar's Head State Park). Interestingly, Greenville and Asheville share television markets. My ABC station is out of Asheville; and, each station's television weather is divided between the "Upstate" and the "Mountains".
I don't know if you're interested in other GA cities (or if you even know of other GA cities) - but, Greenville is like a much larger version Athens, GA (I'm really just comparing both downtown areas - I love downtown Athens). Of course, Greenville does not have an adjacent, major university. Clemson is 35 minutes to the west, Furman is just to the north, and Bob Jones is just to the northeast of downtown Greenville.
May I ask what field of work you are in that offers full-time employment in Greenville and not in the Atlanta metro?

I would recommend staying closer to Greenville. Anderson has all the necessities and a few good amenities thrown in, but you would probably like living in Greenville more. Good things about Greenville are the true 4-season climate, the topography, the parks and greenway system, good arts (both visual and performing) for a city its size, and a bustling regional economy (relative to the rather sluggish national economy). There are lots of transplants here, both from around the U.S. and from outside the U.S.

I work in Pediatric healthcare as a Child Life Specialist. Atlanta has CHOA but they currently have only a 16 hour per week position and are hard to get into. They seem to have a low turnover rate and hire internally often usually leaving position with not so great hours open. Greenville has an opening for 25 hours week weekdays and I hope I can push it to at least 30. I also prefer the position that is available in Greenville for the hours, and the part of the hospital it covers.
