If Bass Pro Shops has indeed committed to Asheville, then that may explain why they passed on Greenville since the locations are so close in proximity. But Cabela's does seem like a good fit as a similar replacement choice. Plus Bass Pro also has stores in Charlotte and Atlanta, so perhaps they thought both a Greenville and Asheville store would be too many.

BPS stores that were announced for Augusta, Huntsville, and Asheville are on hold indefinitely if not cancelled. Notice none of those locations are shown on this map anymore: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/st...atalogId=10001

I'm thrilled to have a Cabela's coming to Greenville. I used to visit the one in Dundee fairly often and still order from their catalog often. It will be pretty awesome to be able to browse the actual store again.

I don't know about that. Cabela's carries hunting and fishing equipment. REI except for knives doesn't. REI sells bikes. Cabela's doesn't. Here are a few things you can get from shopping at REI (if you're a member there) over Cabela's:

-Part of a Co-op
-Receive a dividend check in the mail every March valued at 10% of any regular purchases you made during a one year timeframe.
-100% satisfaction guarantee on all items.
-No receipt needed to return anything.
-Higher end products overall.
-Expertise knowledge from sales associates on the products within their department.

Of course I might be biased with all of this though.

Here is an interesting article with Cabela's CEO from 2011. In it he says this about store size:

Quote:
What’s your store strategy?
Our average size is 155,000 square feet. New stores will be roughly 80,000, 100,000 or 125,000 square feet. Our strategy is to have stores in those formats so we can get economies of scale as we develop them. Our new store in Grand Junction, Colo. fits that vision: It will be 75,000 feet.
I would imagine the Greenville store be closer to the 80k feet range.

Q&A: Great Outdoors - nyse magazine

This article in Forbes is saying new stores are 80-88k feet.

Quote:
New Store Openings Are Big Events
Cabela’s is more than a retailer, it is a shopping experience. Since Cabela’s has such few stores, a store opening is a huge event. On Mar 15, the company opened its 35th store in Wichita with an opening day crowd that some in the press estimated at 10,000 to 15,000.

The in-store restaurant serves wild boar, among other things. It also has a Gun Library and a Bargain Cave feature

Montgomery Ward's space was 100,000 square feet on two levels. Several news stations reported Cabela's going in here. We will not know what will be done until building plans and designs are disclosed.

REI is good for non-game outdoor sports and activities. I love REI for some things and love Cabela's for other things.

Montgomery Ward building will be demolished for the new store.
