I have an opportunity for a great position in Spartanburg. However, I'm a little concerned about quality of life outside of work. Where would you recommend living that is conducive to meeting singles and not boring/typical suburbia in the upstate area?

Criteria:
1. Within 20/25 minute commute to Spartanburg
2. Rent budget $1,200 a month
3. Potential condo/house budget $285,000 maximum
4. NOT typical boring suburbia

Is downtown Greenville a realistic commute time for what I'm looking for?

Personally, I would look into living in Spartanburg itself. You could commute from Greenville but why not check out Spartanburg first?

You don't want that commute, it can easily turn into over an hour either way if there's an incident on I-85, which occurs more often than not during rush hour. Even with no traffic, depending on where in Spartanburg you're working, it's 40-45 minutes. West side of Spartanburg would be a little less time.

I wouldn't discount downtown Spartanburg. Although it's not on the level of downtown Greenville, it's making noticeable improvements and continues to increase its offerings.

Agree with above - the commute from downtown Greenville would be grueling, and Spartanburg is getting a very nice vibe of its own.

Thanks for the help. Wasn't even considering Spartanburg originally.

Are there mountain views from Spartanburg?

I agree that the commute from Greenville would get old real soon. Another option would be Greer, basically half way between Spartanburg and Greenville.

I read this post a while back but was out of town and did not respond. I met a guy in his twenties last week and he said that he had taken a job in downtown Spartanburg a year ago. He said that he had moved to the area from Colorado. He had been commuting from Simpsonville to Spartanburg and that the commute was horrible. He said that he had just found a house in Spartanburg and his commute was now five to ten minutes max. He said that he moved to the eastside of Spartanburg and that he really loves it here. After talking to him I thought of you and remembered this post.
