But I am still interested in the WHERE part. That is, WHERE I might live comfortably in Greenville without owning a car.
Here's one idea that I had when I visited Greenville about 18 months ago. I thought we (my girlfriend and I might live comfortably at the Brio Condo at 1001 South Church St. My logic was that this was close enough to downtown that I could walk, take a bus, or cycle.
Do people know areas that would be a better choice?
this is kind of an impossible question to answer. first of all you would have to tell u s where your job is. if you job is downtown, then living nearby without a car is doable.

I am self employed.
My "job" can be performed mainly on a computer, and by meeting people from time to time.
I suppose that makes me lucky, since I can choose where I want to live without worrying about commuting. Bt I still want an interesting and fulfilling live, and for me that happens in a social environment.

seems like you could have a car and still have an interesting life with social interactions.
i think the answer to your question is obvious though. find a place next to a grocery store and whatever else you want nearby so you can walk there. never hurts to have a car though.

If I choose the right place to live, a car will not be worth the money.
Which is exactly the point of this SEARCH exercise.
I agree completely Geologic. We picked a place fairly close to work and downtown to minimize costs but were limited a bit back when we bought it since it is our first house and I was keeping a tight budget, but I know 100% that whenever we move in the future, we will try and get something even closer.
But yes, sorry, back on track as to where you could accomplish minimizing any transportation costs. There are some new apartment developments downtown and definitely a handful of options down there already. A few come to mind, but hopefully some people with a little more experience with renting/owning directly in our downtown will chime in. I've always liked the location of McBee Station.

IMO, you would want to live right downtown, where there is easy access to groceries, drugstore, restaurants, parks, and the Swamp Rabbit Trail. The condo you listed is about 2-3 blocks from the trail, but would still be quite a walk to get to Main Street. If I could afford it, I would live in McBee station or Riverwalk Apartments, etc. I imagine that they are very expensive, though.
You could also find a place near Woodruff Rd, Haywood Rd, Fairview Rd, etc, where there is plenty of shopping and food. I am able to walk to get most of what I need on Fairview Rd, with a Greenlink bus stop about 2 miles away if need be.

Exactly.
We thought they were good options, but a bit too pricey.
I heard there were some positive developments coming to the 1001 Church area.
Maybe they happened already?

there was a trail between falls park and cleveland park that i walked in that time frame, and i saw a map on the internet that designed it part of the swamp rabbit trail. i thought the swamp rabbit trail was the one from the ymca to travelers rest but it had this one listed as part of the swamp rabit.
