So I'd like to introduce my 4yo to fishing this spring. Is there any good local ponds or small lakes or such where we could go to fish for free (or if in a park I'm ok with that). Somewhere where there are decent amounts of panfish or something similar and fun to catch. Can't have a ton of trees/brush near the lake since that would make casting hard.

I live in Greer and can get to Lake Robinson and Cunningham easily but wasn't sure if there were any other places nearby.

Best parent-kid bonding activity ever -- plus there's that moment when they get their first, very own little zebco rod which for my boys was one of those rites of passage.

Robinson is a great option. It has a covered pier so plenty of shade, a place to sit, bathrooms, etc. You can put in a boat that's 10hp or less -- my boys have their great-granddad's old Jon boat (still the original motor haha). They like Cunningham too.

A bit further away but consider Jones Gap State Park -- the Saluda River runs through the picnic area with some little pools where there are always plenty of little easy-to-catch fish. There's a hatchery pool there too and the rangers will give the kids fish food; your 4-year-old will love that. There are also lakes at Paris Mtn and Table Rock state parks (we get an annual pass from SC State Parks).

Have fun and hope the fish bite!

Thanks all. Yeah, Saluda looks a little far from our home. Been to Jones Gap and might try that area when he's a little older. Too many trees and rocks to snag things for now.

I think I'll start off on either Robinson or Cunningham this spring since they are both 5 minutes from my house and have nice piers/docks.

Might try Table Rock. I fished there a number of years ago but had no luck. (I'm horrible at fishing but I love it)

Many subdivisions have private lakes...private means they are for resident use only. Many don't realize this and have been asked to leave. This PSA brought to you by my HOA.
