I'm sure it depends where you live and who else is around you. We moved to Greenville from Orlando and our boxers always had flea/tick drops put on their necks every month but once we moved here we had a huge gap where we didn't use it, and realized they weren't getting any fleas or ticks and now it's been 6 years since we've used any flea/tick medicine with no problems, and our dogs spend a good 4-6 hours outside on nice days.
Most ppl will tell you you should use prevention stuff no matter where you live, I have two dogs and have never used any, never had any issues(knock on wood) but I live in a small subdivision and my dogs mostly just play in my fenced backyard.
On the flip side of that my mother works at a veterinarians office and tells me that lyme disease is very prevalent in this area., and also uses trifexis for her two dogs.
Back to Trifexis, does that not include heartworm prevention?
Yes, it's an all-in-one. It's a chewable pill. I prefer Trifexis over the liquid drops on the back of the neck. To each his own, but I cannot imagine not using prevention anywhere in the Southeastern US.
I would rather chance side effects of these pills than have a house full of fleas, or dogs with heartworm/lyme disease! We're very supportive of natural remedies but I have not seen any that are proven to work. If someone has a good recipe, by all means share it!
Cost for Trifexis? Can you purchase on line and do you need the vet to give you a prescription? My dogs don't like to chew pills. Does it taste good ?
The last time I bought it at my vet, it was $98.95 for a box of 6 (20-40 lb dogs). I would guess the 12 pack is less per treatment. You can frequently find rebate coupons in the Sunday insert magazines like Parade that will rebate $10 for a 6 pack or $20 for a 12 pack. I haven't googled to see if the rebates are available online... probably. I'm pretty sure you have to have a vet prescription. My dog is not a finicky eater and eats Trifexis like a treat or a dog biscuit.
The one thing I don't like about trifexis is that it doesn't cover ticks. You have to buy something else to prevent the ticks. I used heartguard and something topical to manage the fleas and ticks. my dog stays on heartguard year round and flea and tick about 6-9 months.
