I am from Philadelphia and I am looking to relocate to South Carolina. I am still at the beginning of my research and I have yet to visit these places but I have started applying to jobs. I plan to visit both if and when I get interviews. I have read up a lot on both areas and I just want some opinions now. I am a beach bum so that is what is pushing me more towards Charleston but I have also heard how beautiful The Upstate is.

In your opinions:

Which is a better city for a young (23) single professional to live in?

Which has a better downtown?

Which is more affordable to live in?

Thank you!
Charleston, hands down, for a young single professional. Not even up for discussion IMO.

I think a lot of young working singles would prefer Greenville to Charleston. Anything you can do in Charleston you can do in Greenville except the beach.

I'd say it comes down to a few main things- do you prefer being closer to the ocean, or the mountains/lakes? And money-- cost of living is much lower in Greenville.

Have you considered Savannah, Georgia? It has a lot of the Southern charm, architecture and other things in common with Charleston, but it is not as congested or touristy. I have several friends who live there right now and they love love love it. My old boss teaches at SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design) and he is a transplant from NY like I am. Savannah has a younger crowd, lots of shopping/places to eat/some nightlife... it has pretty easy access to Tybee island beaches (or Hilton Head if you want to drive 45 minutes). The weather is similar to Charleston- hot as heck in the summer.

I lived in Hilton head for a decade and spent a lot of time in Savannah and Charleston. I moved to Hilton Head from upstate NY when I was 32. While not in my 20's, I had many friends and employees who were young and knew all the "cool" places to go in those cities.

When I relocated 18 months ago I could have moved anywhere-- I chose Greenville and upstate SC for so many reasons, but a big one was the vicinity to the mountains, and the beautiful weather. While also in SC, I find the weather here to be so refreshingly different from Hilton Head.
