Those are some impressive numbers. Greenville's hotel occupancy rate of 68% was almost equal to well-known tourism destinations like Charleston, Savannah, and Nashville at 69%. The improvement was over twice the US rate.

That helps explain why so many new hotels have been proposed lately.

You can’t keep a good city down for long, according to VisitGreenvilleSC’s President, Chris Stone.

Valentine’s Day is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg for tourism.

“More and more people are visiting us and that's translating into the dollars they are spending,” said Stone.

Try a billion dollars. That’s what tourism is worth in Greenville.

Greenville's 2% hospitality tax collected on prepared food and drinks draws in money for projects like improvements to the Swamp Rabbit Trail and others.

Hotel occupancy saw a 3% increase last year versus a 0.5% increase statewide, prompting a subtle hint from Stone to Greenville’s lovebirds on Valentine’s Day.

“Where the spirit takes you...get a room,” Stone joked.
