I need ideas on what to add to some Christmas gift baskets for out of town visitors.
I would like to add all Greenville or SC made local goods that cannot be found in other states. Items that people from another region would not normally be able to buy in their state - so the items would be special to them.
Foods? I have peach butter on the list, but is Abbot Farms still open in the winter? What other foods or small items just scream G-ville and SC to you?
Grits from Suber Mill. Since coming here I have become a grits lover! Was just there this morning. Comes in (non-descript) 2lb bags, just $2.00. I'll NEVER make instant grits again!
Something with the Palmetto State Logo on it? There's quite a selection at Wilson's 5&10, which is a hoot to bring people there who have a sense of humor.
Here's a cute thing you could print out and put in the basket. I know it would have helped me when I first came here:
Of course, if you are going to be in Greer, you better make sure you say it as Gerrrrrr. I've been corrected many a time. Oh, and knowing what a buggy is helps too.
When I have people come visit I usually run up to the Megadollar on WH and get a pair of those soft socks for around the house, cheap gloves, a winter hat and if they have, ear muffs. Being from FL that's where my visitors usually come from, and who's winter wear consists of a fleece jacket and not much else. Sorta like me when I moved up here. I also have a little basket I put this in, along with the small travel size toiletries I have from past hotel stays.
I had one more cute idea, but nixed posting it, it may be pushing the envelope for some.
If you could write where these items can be purchased, exactly, that would be great. This is my first year here, and I am likely to be as lost as my out of town visitors when it comes to finding these items For instance, I have no idea what a Benne Wafer is!
You can go to Whole Foods for food products. They have a local section (now by the crackers on the cereal aisle), as well as many other items marked as "local" in the appropriate places around the store (local beers in the beer aisle, e.g).
You could add Sticky Fingers BBQ sauce, since the restaurant chain originated in Mount Pleasant SC
I would skip Sticky Fingers and opt for the Hi-Lo Smoke Company barbecue sauces, which are made in Greenville. Also consider Reedy River Fire Sauce (Blue Moon).
Oh, how about a little brass mouse? I know you can find them around town, but I'm pretty sure Mast General carried them at one point. I actually bought one for my own home. : )
