My family is moving from flat, geologically stable central Indiana to the Greenville area and have just begun house hunting. We are looking in the general area around Furman, mostly at homes built in the 1980's because many are on large lots -- we are looking for lot size of .5 - 1 acre, or more.

Two of the three homes we have considered so far have recently installed foundation remediation - jacks or piers. One is on an easy slope (south of Summersett golf course), the other is in a neighborhood, on a flat lot (near Roe Ford Rd, west of Duncan Rd.). We don't know why it was done or what conditions prompted the owners to have the work done.

We are a little flummoxed - wondering if this is common in that area; if so, if it is common everywhere around Greenville? Or is it actually rare, and we just hit the jackpot by finding it in 2 out of 3? If it is common in that area, we may look in the Taylors / Greer area instead; is that a good idea?

We would appreciate any guidance. Thanks very much.

I think it's more related to the fact that most homes are built fast and cheap. Add 30 yrs to them and they are going to need work. I'd guess erosion from rain is a contributing factor and you will find houses everywhere (not just greenville) with the same problems. The only way to avoid it would be looking at newer homes.
