Clemson University is now ranked among the top 20 national public universities, according to U.S.News & World Report’s annual guide to “America’s Best Colleges” for 2015.

The university is No. 20 on the list, its highest ranking and seventh consecutive year the school has been in the top 25.

“To be ranked among the nation’s top public universities is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of our faculty, staff, students and trustees and the support of our alumni, donors, friends and volunteers,” said Clemson President James P. Clements.

“I congratulate the entire Clemson family on this well-deserved recognition, especially President Emeritus Jim Barker, who started us on this path 15 years ago.”

I'm happy for Clemson, but it's funny that in none of the newspapers reports do you see it mentioned that this was a five way tie for 20th place.

That shouldn't make any difference, really. There's still only 20 schools in the top 20.

Also, we're not reminded of the history of underhanded tactics used to inch up on the list over time. Lists schlimists.

Rankings.......got to love them. Wofford was the ONLY SC school ranked in the top 100 schools published by Forbes. While it is good exposure, to chose one ranking as the best in order to be proclaimed as a top 20 school is a liberal definition.

So based on measurable rankings, Clemson is roughly 40th in research funding and in the 50's for endowment assets, not even first in SC. Class size is manipulated as are drop out metrics.......just this week, Carolina changed the pharmacy school to offer a BS in Pharmacy because students in the program we classified as a drop out once they got to a certain point. Clemson, by its own admission, manages class size between semesters to show more a better score for US News. Professor salaries at Clemson are reported in an interesting way to show better on the scores.........the point to this is that any audit lens on what some schools submit would make the Enron CFO seem like an honest man. The interesting thing to note is that in typical Greenville fashion, there has been an opinion piece from The Greenville News praising the ranking in addition to articles. In other more mature markets, these ranking get a collective yawn...............The Observer will list out the local schools with a note about the low respect that US News rankings actually get even though Chapel Hill has not manufactured metrics to be included. I have written it before, Wofford, Furman, USC and Clemson are the top 4 schools in SC by a wide margin. Deciding between the four is largely determined by what you want.....to watch a community get so excited over magazine rankings that the world largely ignores is funny.

Huh. Then they are in the top 25, not the top 20.

The headline is a bit misleading.

Looks like Clemson is going to add a veterinarian college, the first in the state. It's surprising Clemson did not have one with it having a agriculture college.

Currently SC residents are eligible for in state tuition at UGA's vet college and perhaps other colleges.

The case could be made universities in high population states, like UNC and G Tech, are manipulating the rankings by keeping their undergrad enrollment relatively low which helps boost selectivity. Clemson has a larger undergrad enrollment than both UNC and G Tech despite being located in the 23rd most populated state. If Clemson's objective was to game the rankings, it seems like they would have kept the enrollment at 15,000 in 2000, or reduce it, rather than increase it to 21,653 students today.

Clemson is not a Greenville community college. Students come from all the state and the country to attend. 35% are out of state. Wando and one of the high schools on the outskirts of Columbia are typically the two most represented SC high schools at Clemson. The city of Greenville and residents have no financial stake in the university. The majority of Greenville residents didn't attend Clemson. Clemson grads in Greenville generally talk about their experience at the college which is more than academics.

The most positive article I've read about Clemson academics was in the Wall Street Journal. https://www.tntech.edu/strategic/pdf...Seperating.PDF I wouldn't have thought a college in SC, little ol Clemson, would be on the mind of a writer in NY. The piece is titled U.S. Colleges Are Separating Into Winners and Losers. Clemson was presented as a winner and the only winner the article mentions specifically.

It looks like Clemson has the largest endowment in the state. This table lists the college endowment market values in a recent year. https://www.nacubo.org/-/media/Nacub...5FEC42FFBDEB56 USC is a few spots behind so Clemson's endowment per student has to be significantly higher.

Clemson is the only SC college on the current Forbes rankings. Clemson offers a greater variety of programs especially science based programs than small liberal arts schools like Winthrop. Around 35% of Clemson graduates did a STEM major and that is one of the highest percentages in the country. https://www.usnews.com/education/blo...STEM%20fields. Most of the universities ahead of Clemson on that list are polytechnic universities, Clemson has more balance.
