Hudson Corners Shopping Center is a retail center located on the southwest corner at the intersection of Old Spartanburg Road and Hudson Road in Greer, South Carolina. It was constructed and opened in 1989. Its original major tenants were Harris Teeter and Eckerd Drugs.

Harris Teeter; 2135 Old Spartanburg Road, Greer, South Carolina 29650-2704:

Harris Teeter's Hudson Corners Shopping Center store, 32,960 square feet in size, was the chain's first store in upstate South Carolina.

Harris Teeter was the first competitor for Winn Dixie #1293, located at Eastgate Village. Bi-Lo #5274, then known as store #274, would open in 1991 at Brushy Creek Crossing, 2460 Hudson Road, Greer, South Carolina 29650-2923.

Winn Dixie replaced both stores #1293 and #1064 (Edwards Forest Plaza, 3245 Wade Hampton Boulevard, Taylors, South Carolina 29687-2803) with store #1059, a Marketplace and Food Pavilion store. Winn Dixie #1059 opened in July 1995, and closed in May 2000. It is presently Pivotal Fitness.

Harris Teeter sold several stores to Bi-Lo, including all five stores in Greenville and Spartanburg counties, in 2001. Bi-Lo operated its Food$mart store, #393, here from late 2001 to its closing in early 2005.

Eckerd Drugs #1238; 2129 Old Spartanburg Road, Greer, South Carolina 29650-2704:

Eckerd Drugs #1238, adjacent to Winn Dixie #1231 at Eastgate Village, relocated to Hudson Corners Shopping Center. The chain was acquired by Rite Aid in 2007. Eckerd Drugs #1238 became Rite Aid #11651. It closed on 30 September 2010.

Its competition was CVS Pharmacy #4153, previously a Revco, presently in business at Brushy Creek Crossing, 2446 Hudson Road, Greer, South Carolina 29650-2923.

This space was recently occupied by Dollar Mart, which has now closed.

Phase II:

Development of Hudson Corners Shopping Center had a proposed phase II, which would have added retail from Harris Teeter to where McDonald's #16321, 2137 Old Spartanburg Road, Greer, South Carolina 29650-2764, is located. I do not know if Harris Teeter considered expansion in the late 1990s.

Present:

Bi-Lo #5274 and CVS Pharmacy #4153 are the only supermarket and drug store chains operating in their immediate community.

Aside from McDonald's #16321, BB&T (2101 Old Spartanburg Road, Greer, South Carolina 29650-2704) and UPS Store #232 (2123 Old Spartanburg Road, Greer, South Carolina 29650-2704), Hudson Corners Shopping Center is mostly local stores and small restaurants.

Future:

I do not know what the future of Hudson Corners Shopping Center holds. Another supermarket, likely providing food and pharmacy, could come in. A new store would likely be larger than Harris Teeter/Food$mart #393.

I sometimes wonder if this retail strip is on a sacred burial ground. <grin> Nothing - other than China Restaurant and the adjacent McD's - can seem to survive there very long. This is surprising because it's surrounded by dozens of large neighborhoods. All it seems to need is a retail "draw" to bring it back to life. Trader Joe's would probably do great, but that'll never happen.

I dunno what can compete with Bi-Hi across the street, unless a Whole Foods/Earthfare type market opens. (Yeah, Earthfare is just up Pelham, I know.) Even then, the prospects seem "iffy."

What a true shame - this center had such great possibilities; now it's a ghost town.

Hudson Corners Shopping Center and the vicinity needs neither a discount grocer nor a specialty/gourmet grocer. It needs a conventional supermarket with Ingle's, Publix and Walmart Neighborhood Market as logical options to compete against Bi-Lo #5274.

It doesn't need another super market. There are 3 Publix stores within a 10 or less min drive as well as 4 BiLo's. Fresh Market might be nice or even a Wine Store like Green's or the one on Woodruff.

I was by there today and the place has one vacant supermarket sized space. The almost all the rest of the spaces appear to be occupied.

Default Hudson Corners Shopping Center, 2129 Old Spartanburg Road, Greer, South Carolina 29650-2704

I would like to know the current leasing status for 2129 Old Spartanburg Road, Greer, South Carolina 29650-2704. Rite Aid assumed the lease of Eckerd Drug #1238 when it acquired Eckerd Drug in its entirety in 2007. After Rite Aid #11651 closed in 2010, Rite Aid may have been allowed to sublease its abandoned space until the lease expired. If the lease is currently ongoing, Rite Aid will likely not renew, and a supermarket wanting both food and pharmacy its is store can do so without restriction.

The Rite Aid has been closed for since the summer. Bada Bing replaced Pizza Hut, and China Restaurant remains; but I'm not sure about the nail place. There is another store to the side of Bada Bing facing Hudson Road, last I looked it was a education/tutoring place.

That leaves currently empty spaces that used to be Winn Dixie (or was it Harris Teeter?), Eckards (then Rite Aid), Hair Cuttery, Travel Agency, and a former Yoga place.

...Still too small for an IKEA, but it's fun trying to start a rumor.
