I thought very little of the annual car property tax goes to roads. It goes to Schools, fire, etc, just like home property taxes right? It has like a very small fee that goes to road maintenance I believe.

The $200 increase they were proposing was on the sales tax when you purchase a vehicle. Its capped at $300 now and would go to $500. I don't think it had anything to do with increasing the annual vehicle property tax.

Good question! I think $1600 is excessive even for 2 cars too but that might explain it! If it does, you'll win in the long run OP, I suppose, especially if the gas tax does increase!

What model we talking about OP?

I just paid $419.00 for a 2019 Ford Edge. I thought South Carolina was cheaper? I only paid $234.00 in Buncombe County in Asheville, NC where prices are outrageous for everything. What's the deal here?

"South Carolina is cheaper" is a very blunt statement that may be accurate overall but is not accurate in every area. I lived in Charlotte around 2010 and I do remember vehicle taxes there are lower (but you also must get your vehicle inspected) insurance in NC was slightly cheaper, housing prices are higher, income taxes were lower (for me) (but would be higher in NC if you were in a top income tax bracket), gas costs more, iirc groceries are subject to sales tax in NC but not in SC.

I suspect property taxes are higher in NC but I'm not sure since I rented there.

Not sure about now but when I lived in Tennessee the annual wheel tax on my vehicle was $40 to get my plate sticker renewal every year. No vehicle property tax. No state income taxes either but the trade off was the sales tax was around 10% in my county. I would make those trades in SC - heck the sales tax in some counties here is already at 8% (including local added in) and you still have to pay property taxes on vehicles and state income tax - withholding from your paycheck. I rented in Tenn. so not sure about home property taxes compared to SC.
