Did anyone else notice a new line item charge on their September Bills for Duke Energy on the September bill? Mine read "Fixed Monthly Leaf 50C Charge" Its only .5 percent of the bill but I called customer service and I was told it was a new charge for Solar Energy Research that was allowed by government. While the charge is minimal they could have put an insert in the bill or given their customers a heads up on the bill to the new charge.
They probably didn't inform anyone because they figured nobody would realize it. I am like you, when my bills come in, I always check them. I can't tell you how many times I've had mistakes on my bills.

Someone called from billing and said they did put an insert in the bill explaining the charge. Maybe I threw it away without reading but she said it would be a fixed charge each month of .42 cents for residences. I agree about always checking every bill carefully because you never know.
With 7.3 million retail customers, if they are doing this $0.42 charge everywhere, that is over $36 million in additional revenue a year for Duke for essentially doing nothing.
I think at the next public utilities meeting (or whatever they call it here) where they ask for their rate increases and get them approved, we should all go and demand a big rate reduction. Before we do that we ought to find out who on the council has been continuing to approve the rate increases.

Duke is probably looking to make extra money to make up for hits that they will be taking in 2019. A Florida company, NTE, is building a natural gas power plant at exit 5 of I 85 in Kings Mountain. Several cities in NC & SC will drop Duke & switch to NTE. After the NTE announcement, Duke announced a natural gas plant near Asheville.
Also, what about the news that they are buying Piedmont Natural Gas? If we think prices are bad now, what about when there is no competition?
