We have lived here for five years and absolutely love it, but the allergies here are so bad, it's becoming unbearable. I once read that the Upstate is the worst in the entire country. Our four year old daughter suffers so much, it enflames her eczema so bad that she scratches until she bleeds. I just don't know what to do anymore.

After living here for 3 ½ years I agree. My 10 year old daughter is having her tonsils and adenoids taken out this Thursday. She also has eczema that gets bloody if we don’t use her ointment regularly. After trying many different prescriptions I have found “Hydrocortisone Butyrate OINTMENT” !!! Ointments work soooooo much better that creams. This stuff works wonders on her. It is very gentle on her sensitive skin and clears up even her worst patches overnight.

So sad to hear all of this. I luckily have never had any issues except with sinuses. My son on the other hand did have even as a child. He had to take shots twice a week. All grass, tree & pollen related allergies. He had to go to a childrens allergy specialist to get diagnosed properly. This the worst year I have ever seen.

When we moved here 9 summers ago, there were very little trees in our neighborhood. Over those 9 years they have grown significantly so that now there is more pollen to be created each year. If you think your allergies are getting worse year after year, this may have something to do with it.

We do use a steroidal topical occasionally, but we're just really hesitant to put too may steroids on her as the side effects can be pretty bad. Does your daughter also have asthma and food allergies like ours?

Yup, that's a great point. But I also read that the Upstate and northern Georgia have more different type of trees than anywhere else in the country.

I am so sorry. We have 5 kids and we all suffer severe problems. We are always sick even in the summer.

I learned it is NOT just the pollen but MOSTLY the pollution that we have here. We have some of the worst pollution in the Country. There is Scientific proof. Up at Grandfather Mountain in NC in the Nature Museum there is a Scientific Study on the wall with Pictures showing the Trees on the Western Slopes Thriving while the Eastern Slopes they were Dying. Study states that we collect all the pollution from Atlanta and Charlotte here on this side of the Mountains and the population is growing so much here in the upstate just adds to that pollution.

The pollution along with the pollen is the reason why almost everyone is getting sick all the time. I have talked with Doctors who have moved here from other states including right next door in Georgia and they all say this area is the worst they have ever seen.

Well, the pollen is gone, but now it has been replaced by an even worse enemy; ragweed. Our oldest daughters' eyes swelled up last night, she began coughing uncontrollably and she's so stuffed up. The pediatrician said that it's almost epidemic' right now, she said that Sept. and Oct. are the peak and the Upstate is the worst area in the entire country.

We love it here so much, but the allergies are just so bad, almost all year 'round. There's a couple at our church that has contemplated moving because of it.

I'm a lurker, but logged in because I noticed you mentioned your daughter's pediatrician. I have a 13-year-old with food and environmental allergies -- in my experience, a specialist is the way to go. There are several good allergy/asthma practices in town.
