Can someone help shed some light on this.

I've seen numbers ranging from 100,000 to about a million. If there are a million in Greenville, they certainly must be counting Spartanburg and other surrounding suburbs??. This also does not make sense as I've read that Columbia is the largest metro area in the state with about 700,000 people.

We actually saw that million number, too, when we were looking into the area. I think that is in the entire "Upstate-" several counties.

That 56,000 number is misleading because the actual area of incorporated Greenville is really quite small in comparison to what many people would include as Greenville.

Actually the million number does carry some validity. The metro area used to be defined as Greenville/Spartanburg/Anderson and the population was in excess of one million. At that time the metro was the largest in South Carolina.

Under the new metro guidelines, here are the populations (aproximate):

Greenville (city) - 57,000
Greenville (metro, MSA) - 625,000
Greenville (CSA) - 1,100,000

Keep in mind that all South Carolina cities have odd annexation laws and the city populations do accurately reflect the area. Greenville feels like a city of 250,000 and were it in any other state, the boundaries would reflect such.

The original metro was GSA which is Greenville, Spartanburg, and Anderson together. They all touch each other going down the 85 corridor. That area is indeed 1 million+ now. I look for them to be rejoined in the next census. It was broken up in 2000 and Greenville's metro is projected as 600,000 or so. Greenville's urban area was 302,194 in 2000, which most urban enthusiast will tell you is a more accurate way to tell the size of a city. City limits are government drawn lines for the basis of taxes and other government things. South Carolina has very strict annexation laws, saying that the only way a city can annex is if the people in the area to be annexed agree to be annexed. I believe our mayor is working on this now. Thats why it feels much bigger than 60,000.
