I’m thinking about people that might be in a service industry or anybody else for that matter. I donate to orgs such as the Salvation Army, but would happily deliver groceries to an out of work family, contact churches maybe? Personal interaction with those in need is probably frowned on, but cutting out the middleman and their overhead appeals to me.Thoughts?

Most area churches have food pantries, and usually don't charge anything, so there is no overhead. You could volunteer with a food bank or soup kitchen if you want to get more involved. I've helped serve at Triune Mercy Center feeding the homeless. North Greenville Crisis Ministry is another good one. These places exist to help organizations and individuals that want to help the needy, but don't know how. It's tricky; if you just give stuff to the homeless, some of them will sell it to buy drugs or alcohol. Believe it or not, many places have a vetting process for volunteers to prevent 'volunteers' from preying on the very people they are supposedly helping!

Typically I will donate cash to a good cause. Let them decide how to best meet their needs.
