'consultants have been working on plans for an observation area that could include a tower that would provide a view of the Greenville skyline as well as a panoramic view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.'
Here in Naperville, we have had a Riverwalk since the early 1980s that is the centerpiece of the downtown; and in 2000, dedicated a 140 foot observation tower and carillon similar to what's been proposed for Unity Park. It's on top of a hill where there are concerts during yearly festivals like our Ribfest and Last Fling at the end of summer. It's been a great addition to our downtown. I hope the project goes well for Greenville.
It's an interesting concept. I guess the tower will be served by an elevator? If it's 120 feet tall, that's around the height of a 10 story building, and that should give a good view of the mountains to the north.
Nice to see them embracing the history of the area being used to create the park. I hope there will be some historical markers / exhibits that highlight that history. With more and more people moving here from other areas, fewer people know the history of Greenville and the surrounding area.
This combined with the County Square redevelopment will change the face of Greenville. I know many here do not want more growth and see Greenville become the next Charlotte, but it's happening. If these projects are done correctly, they will spur tremendous growth.
