Kmart Plaza is a retail center bordered by Interstate 185 on the east, West Faris Road on the south, Wallace Street on the west, Marue Drive on the northwest, and Henrydale Avenue in the Greenville community in Greenville County, South Carolina. It is anchored by a discount department store, Kmart #4016, and a supermarket, BI-LO #5016.

Kmart #4016, 1 Kmart Plaza, Greenville, South Carolina 29605-4442
Kmart #4012 opened in or before 1962 as the first Kmart in South Carolina. It had a grocery store that was later closeout store Big Lots #1294, 4 Kmart Plaza, Greenville, South Carolina 29605-4442. The auto center closed either in 1999 or in 2000. The pharmacy has been open since 1981.

(Big Lots #1294 relocated to the former Winn-Dixie #1281, Anderson Road Plaza, 2600 Anderson Road, Greenville, South Carolina 29611-6020. It closed in August 2015. American Freight occupies that location.)

Kmart #4016's future could be uncertain as Kmart's parent company, Sears Holdings, closes Sears and Kmart stores. The store has no direct competition with other discount department stores and hypermarkets in the trade area.

BI-LO #5016, 6 Kmart Plaza, Greenville, South Carolina 29605-4442
BI-LO #5016 opened in 1998 as store 16. It replaced an adjacent older store. BI-LO #16 featured a pharmacy department and a cafe with its bakery and delicatessen departments.

BI-LO #16 became store 5016 after BI-LO acquired Winn-Dixie in 2012 and renumbered all BI-LO stores into the 5xxx range.

BI-LO #5016 may be in the process of closing with the closing of food (grocery, meat, produce, and seafood) and pharmacy departments and discontinuation of customer services. There is no direct grocery competition in the trade area. (Its former competitor, supermarket Winn-Dixie #1084, River Oaks, 951 Grove Road, Greenville, South Carolina 29605-4278, closed in 2005. The location is now a Department of Veteran Affairs Outpatient Clinic.)

Kmart #4016 would be approaching 55 years of operation later this year.

Kmart #4016's future could be decided by its lease. Kmart's parent company, Sears Holdings, has closed many Kmart and Sears stores with expiring leases. Kmart #4016 may do good business without direct competition. Sadly, if its lease is up, the likelihood of the lease not being renewed and the store closing increases.

I remember the old advertising signs for that K-Mart along I-185 coming from the south, and along US 29/Mills Ave. coming from the north, that read "One Good Smile to K-Mart".
