Does anyone remember when Mills Center (or whatever it's called: the large mill on Mills Avenue that I think is now lofts, and I think is where the Handelbar was) used to be an outlet mall?
If so, what was in it when it was a mall: locally-owned "mom and pop" stores or national chains?
I remember going there when I was a kid and still remember a store there that was like a Peanut Shack: it had all sorts of snacks, including excellent peanut/cashew/etc. mixes. I wish I remembered the name!
Moving on from that, why doesn't Greenville have an outlet mall? Spartanburg used to have one, and the outlet mall in Gaffney is far enough and small enough that it hasn't stopped Charlotte from getting 2 outlet malls.
It was ran By Mills Centre Limited Trust from 1979 to it's closing in 1986. I remember visiting also as a young guy and there being a mixture of stores and the Handlebar starting out there.

Funny you mention this. When my daughter and I were driving back from Charlotte yesterday, we passed the outlets in Gaffney. She said it was weird that Greenville doesn't have outlet stores and you have to drive that far to get to them. Asheville has them as well. Wonder why Greenville doesn't
I remember that also but was very young. There was a deli/sandwich shop in that mill also. It was run by a local rest. chain which I can't remember. I believe it was the same chain that had locations eventually in the Belk stores at McAlister Square and Haywood too for awhile in the 90's.
Many of the textile and sewing mills were still in existence then but fading fast and moving out of the country. Many of the stores at Mills were outlets for them to sell their goods that were seconds and overruns.
I don't think there were a lot of national retail chain outlets back in the 80's. Most of the outlets were run directly by the factories back then. The big retail chain outlet centers like Prime in Gaffney didn't really become big until the 90's. A lot of them are just as expensive as their regular stores now and I think calling them outlets is just another way to market their goods.

That is true about being just as expensive That's the reason that I don't shop at them.
