Gateway Village is a retail center located on the eastern side of Walnut Lane between Club Drive and Hawkins Road in the City of Travelers Rest in Greenville County, South Carolina. It is anchored by a supermarket, BI-LO #5653, 148 Walnut Lane, Travelers Rest, South Carolina 29690-1600.

Gateway Village opened around 1991 with BI-LO #5653, then BI-LO #253, and drugstore Revco as anchors. Both BI-LO and Revco relocated from Travelers Rest Plaza, 21 Plaza Drive, Travelers Rest, South Carolina 29690-1688. (BI-LO's Travelers Rest Plaza store is now George Coleman Ford's sales department.)

Revco was acquired by CVS in 1997. Revco's Gateway Village store was replaced by CVS #3188, 200 North Highway 25, Travelers Rest, South Carolina 29690-2300, in 1998.

BI-LO #253 expanded in 2000 to add a pharmacy and a cafe. It became BI-LO #653 when Ahold acquired Bruno's and merged it into BI-LO. BI-LO store numbers with duplicating store numbers were renumbered. BI-LO #653 became BI-LO #5653 when BI-LO acquired Winn-Dixie in 2011, and BI-LO stores were renumbered into the 5xxx range.

I have heard speculation BI-LO #5653 could become a Publix. This would be the first speculation I have heard of Publix considering a store location in Travelers Rest.

Publix could use a second location on that side of town. The Poinsett Hwy store at Furman is aging and small. It is almost identical inside layout to the Fairview Market location in Simpsonville that was just replaced.

I think Publix missed an opportunity to replace the University store with a new larger store with pharmacy drive-thru across Poinsett Hwy (next door to the Mosby Poinsett Apartments) where Lidl supposedly is going to eventually go.

Publix has opportunities to open additional store locations in Greenville County. Travelers Rest would be an opportunity.

University Square has been a good location for both Winn-Dixie #1056 and Publix #576, 5000 Old Buncombe Road, Greenville, South Carolina 29617-8208, for groceries. The customer base is usually Furman University students and residents along the Old Buncombe Road and Duncan Chapel Road corridors. Publix #576, which opened in 1996, added the pharmacy in 2007. The store location could easily expand, relocate the pharmacy into the expanded area, and have a pharmacy drive thru.

Default BI-LO #5653, Gateway Village, 148 Walnut Lane, Travelers Rest, South Carolina 29690-1600

Driving through Travelers Rest on Wednesday, 15 November, I passed by Gateway Village. Excluding associates' vehicles, there were few vehicles parked at BI-LO #5653.

BI-LO #5653 has reduced its hours of operation. It previously closed at 2300 hours (11 pm). It now closes at 2200 hours (10 pm).

When I was running WD #1056, Furman Kids would sneak and inhale the nitrous oxide out of whipped cream cans.
