It takes alot to get me to go out of Atlanta. I have done it a few times in recent years, in fact, most times i've flown in recent years, because of various reasons. In 2015 and 2016 I went out to Vegas with a teen each time and getting the direct flight was a factor. This year, going to Vegas, i'll have folks from Alabama traveling with me, so, Atlanta worked the best.
I went to see my dad in Des Moines last year, flew out of Charlotte.. Saved about $100 and, as I've said.. I don't mind Charlotte at all.
When the boy and I went to see him back in 2010 or so, we flew GSP to Kansas City as that was cheap and convenient.. Until USAirways cocked up flights out there and back and I wound up returning... To Charlotte and renting a car because they cancelled all flights back to GSP.

We did use Charlotte once, and yes it was super simple to get to, but it was for a friend coming from Minnesota and the available flights worked well for them. Most of the time when I tried to price Charlotte from Tampa it was always more expensive than a GSP or ATL.
Vegas makes total sense. I used to travel there for work when we lived in FL, and many of those flights went through Atlanta.
We didn't mind a trip or two a year to Atlanta, since we could visit a couple of stores that we couldn't get in Greenville.

I was looking at a list of the top 100 busiest US airports (using 2016 data) to compare some of our area airports. Here are a few results: Top-100 U.S. Airports in 2016 | By Passengers and Air Cargo
1. ATL of course with about 102MM passengers
10. CLT with about 43MM
39. RDU 11MM
64. CHS 3.65MM
66. RIC 3.6MM
80. BHM 2.7 MM (surprisingly low to me)
85 SAV 2.1MM
87. GSP 2MM
91. MYR 1.95MM
95. TYS 1.8MM
97. PTI 1.7MM
GSP came in slightly above MYR, TYS, PTI, and also Palm Springs, Syracuse, Little Rock (surprisingly low) and Portland ME.
Other airports like CAE, Chattanooga, Asheville, and Huntsville are not on the list and have 1MM or less
There are only 42 (of the nations 376 commercial airports) having more than 10MM passengers.
Only 14 have between 10MM and 5MM
31 have between 5MM and 2MM (with a couple more being just a hair short)
Another interesting observation is what happened to Memphis and Cincinnati (as others have noted); they went from hubs to just 4MM and 6.4MM respectively!
Anyway, in looking at this, I wonder what potential GSP truly has. It is not a tourist area like CHS, MYR, or even AVL, and does not have the high white collar base to be a major business draw like RDU. I wonder what other destinations GSP can realistically get. Hopefully Denver and Vegas frequency will increase, but what else? I could see Boston, an Ohio City (Columbus or Cleveland), LAX and maybe SFO one day, and possibly Pittsburgh or even Buffalo with the high number of movers from that area. Places like MSP, New Orleans, St Louis, Phoenix, Seattle, Salt Lake City, etc may not even be realistic or necessary. With GSP not being a major tourist or business CSA, and with the close competition (as we all know), what might the ceiling be for GSP? Just some thoughts and musings...

Those numbers are old. MYR has passed GSP and CHS has leapfrogged quite a few cities and will leapfrog some more this year. GSP has potential, but for now it'll probably keep landing hub and focus cities. Can't see GSP getting a city like Buffalo or Columbus anytime soon. Takes more than just people moving in to get an airline route. Us natives would never go to Buffalo. LA and SF seem like a stretch imo. Pittsburgh maybe, Boston less maybe.
Thing is Atlanta is GSP's biggest blessing and curse. A 20 minute connection will get you most anywhere in the world, and that's the problem. Atlanta is by far GSP's biggest destination. LAX is Atlanta's 4th biggest route. So if you're Delta, what's easier: just connecting the GSP folks to ATL and then putting them on a larger plane with everyone else? Or spend fuel and wear on a plane to take this handful of people to LA. Because really how many people are going to use LAX to come visit the Upstate.
Numbers aren't that big a deal. I'd like to see Southwest give GSP another chance and see Jetblue come in. More options from the legacies. The more diversified GSP is, the better. More daily options too. Those 2-a-week flights you have to plan your vacation around, which sucks.

Wow, didn't realize data that is a year and a half old would be so hard to deal with !
It's the most up to date list I could find. But that is really missing the point anyway. The data and rankings are close enough, I really just meant to show a ballpark of where GSP and some area airports fit in, and wonder a bit about its potential going forward.

It is currently around 2.2 million. It'll keep growing with the area. Nice airport.

I told you to be patient, distoredlogic. It was just a matter of time. This is huge for GSP, even huger considering it’s not Spirit.
Wednesdays and Saturday. At least 3 days a week would be great, but it’s a start. They should eventually expand the calendar if demand is hot.

YES! My husband and I love Vegas, and denver so we were ready to book, but they are only booking through nov. right now. that should change fast! wasn't this just the best news!?

Starting today, Frontier Airlines doubles the number of flights between Denver and Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP). Twice-weekly nonstop flights will increase to four times a week.
The airline’s seasonal nonstop service to Las Vegas and Orlando also resumes today. Las Vegas and Orlando flights to and from GSP will operate each week on Monday and Friday.
